In a post announcing the initiative, VSCO’s director of consumer and product communications, Shavone Charles stressed the importance of supporting photography and art by Black creators, especially in the wake of an overdue national reckoning with pervasive anti-Blackness and racism. “Black people don't just deserve to be alive — we also deserve to be happy,” she wrote.
“Through our efforts to amplify Black stories, the most important piece I continue to think about is our duty to shine light on the nuance and the spectrum or our diaspora,” Shavone said, noting that those stories should be “inclusive of but not exclusive to our trauma. We have scope and deep spectrum behind our stories and identities. There’s true depth and brilliance to all that we are.
In particular, she believes social media platforms like VSCO and others help tear down the pervasive barriers within photography and other forms of storytelling. “Black communities and Black creatives now have the tools to shape how we are remembered and celebrated, through our lens, and on our terms,” Shavone said. “I hope our call to action for #BlackJoyMatters sparks more conversation and collective action surrounding the importance of archiving and celebrating Black stories.
As a black African, beautiful and well endowed with a good free life of rich culture,fashion,music,art,food,weather, people,nature and all God's most blessed treasured for our land, I am more convinced to be and love who I am! I pray not to change it for anything unless God says!
