Every day, Americans donate their time, skills and energy to their communities by volunteering with nonprofit organizations. The Associated Press interviewed five volunteers about what motivated them to get involved and why they think more people don’t give their time.

For a decade + I’ve volunteered at a local performing arts center. As a science person with no art ability it’s my way of contributing to the arts. As to barriers for volunteering, time of day. The art center is open at night so I can easily volunteer without giving up a weekend.

Nonprofits scramble for help amid dearth of volunteersAs pandemic-related government aid programs end and inflation rises, nonprofits of all kinds are looking everywhere and trying everything to get volunteers. According to a recent U.S. Census Bureau and AmeriCorps survey, formal volunteer participation was 23.2%, a drop of 7 percentage points between 2019 and 2021. That's the largest decrease this survey has recorded since it started in 2002. It’s reached the point where the lack of volunteers strains the safety net that nonprofits provide to many of society’s most vulnerable. The largest drop between 2019 and 2021 in any state was Colorado at 16.1 percentage points. Hawaii. Wisconsin and Ohio also saw double-digit drops. Utah also saw an 8.8 percentage-point drop, but still has the highest rate of volunteering in the country. It is hard to find volunteer opportunities. So many are through corporations or churches. It’s not mentioned but lack of a communication method is a big issue. Usually you need to be on the right social media. Which one? Where is the town square? This applies to a lot of things. Same here
