The Alliance for the Great Lakes’ Adopt-a-Beach event at Wendy Park, April 24, 2022CLEVELAND, Ohio -- On a sunny afternoon in Cleveland with the temperature hovering at a balmy 80 degrees and many enjoying the day with recreational activities, volunteers gathered at Wendy Park in Cleveland to clean-up the beach.

The Alliance for the Great Lakes, a nonpartisan nonprofit working across the Great Lakes region to help clean and protect our lakes from litter, kicked off their spring season Adopt-a-Beach clean-up in celebration of Earth Day weekend. The litter picked up this year along the shores of the Great Lakes could put the total amount of trash that’s been kept out of our lakes at over half a million pounds, according to theMelanie Wolf with Evergreen, the beach clean-up sponsor, said that over 75 volunteers registered for the Wendy Park assignment and more arrived during the 3-hour litter removal event.

One piece of litter found in the breakwall rocks was kept by a volunteer from the 13u Shamrocks club baseball team from Cleveland, a slightly used whiffle ball. Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
