Virginia lacrosse's Ben Wayer has reclaimed his life from drugs and depression

CHARLOTTESVILLE – In late spring of 2023, Ben Wayer and his father, Kevin, made a three-day drive from Utah to their family’s home in northern Virginia. Along the way, they stopped to play golf and visit Kevin’s hometown of Chicago.“The only sad part of that trip was the last two minutes, driving into our neighborhood, when it was over,” an emotional Kevin said Wednesday. “It was a birth back into the world.

His first two seasons at UVa saw him play in 23 games, including the Cavaliers’ 2021 national championship victory. “I was just so lost and honestly helpless. I had to make a change,” Wayer said this week as he and UVa prepared to play Johns Hopkins in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. “I was ready to make a change. I couldn’t keep living life the way I was living.”

Wayer was completely detached from his friends and Virginia teammates until he was allowed to receive a stack of letters at Christmas. Nearly every member of the Cavaliers’ team had written to him.So did the fact that Tiffany told him, when he left school that, if he was able to and had the desire, Wayer would be welcomed back to the team.

Wayer stopped picturing that at nighttime during his time on the Appalachian trail. For the first time in his life, those dreams seemed too far-fetched to even consider.
