's supersonic jet performs as well as expected, the company would easily break a long-standing transatlantic airline record., or about 2,300 miles per hour. Based on the estimated flight time of a Mach 3-capable aircraft, that means Virgin Galactic's jet would fly from New York City to London in about 2 hours.
That would shatter the current transatlantic commercial flight record, set by a British Airways supersonic Concorde jet in February 1996. That flight went from New York City to London in 2 hours, 52 minutes, 59 seconds — with the Concorde averaging 1,250 miles per hour, or about Mach 2.
And if it launches as quickly as Beardy's space ship we will be waiting many years
katherineOma Didn't we have one of those before!?!
OBAMA fucked it up by allowing Democrats to tell people they will “build on the ACA”
Media outlets keep pumping $SPCE, major short signal.
Smoke and mirrors, does virgingalactic richardbranson gtwhitesides even have a prototype
Making the corona even faster
wallOfWorryFL Wow....Just what we need right now. A supersonic jet!🤦♀️ London won’t even have us because of our gargantuan failure to control COVID19
I don't see the point of conquering supersonic or even hypersonic speed while it's an exclusive affair for the ultra rich.
Belgian Congo - NYC in two hours .... Mr. Burns did...
Very cool - I guess to be profitable (did concorde operate at a profit or was a flagship?) it would cost like $10k each way?
Read similar things at least as far back as Ronald Reagan promising such technology.
How much is Branson paying to keep rerunning this article?
Didn't they just file for bankruptcy
Freddy Laker ?
Only inflate more market
😳🙊🙈😬
After industry rationalizations for decades that supersonic travel could never be practical, what changed?
vaporware ain't gonna fly.
But but Virgin filed for bankruptcy
How long would it take to go from New York to LA? how long would it take to go from Chicago to Florida? how long would it take to go from Houston to Chicago? How long would it take to go from phoenix to Nashville?
Yeah, sure.
blhack
Outrageous__fun as if they aren't destroying planet earth fast enough. totally anti-earth, anti-environment plan.
I donno. Seems questionable. Is there a physics report on this?
Didn’t we go through all this with the concord in the 1970’s & early 80’s ? Nice try but This isn’t new looks like it’s a reboot
Not happening after richardbranson declared bankruptcy on his Virgin American Venture. Guy tried using his private island as collateral after British government wouldn’t bail him out...something about dodging taxes offshore. 😂🤡
Big deal. What's the rush?
Wow, only carries 9-19 passengers?
At 19 seats, how much is that ticket? Who would pay that who doesnt have their own jet share?
I imagine these will be just as disastrous for the environment as the Concordes were.
Do you get peanuts on the flight?
Their 2nd airline company just went out of business..
But what about the noise from going supersonic and the shockwaves from it breaking glass on houses and stuff
The plane will carry between 9 and 19 passengers Ok, I thought it was going to be a commercial aircraft like Concorde, not a private Gulfstream on steroids.
'If' doing a lot of work in that headline.
Bravo
There won't be one. The same problems exist - and won't go away - that plagued the financial feasibility of Concorde: Noise, fuel economy and pollution. Probably safety, too, as the layout doesn't seem all that different than Concorde. Only one major accident and it was over.
And yet we can't feed our people, can't supply them with drinkable water or public housing and can't keep millions from ending up homeless during the worst pandemic facing the human race in over 100 years. Stop bragging
And only cost $20,000 a ticket round trip maybe
Does issue of sonic boom has been resolved? and about fule efficiency Because there was Concorde Airplane that was not commercially viable
Should be ready fly in 20 years or so. 😂
Good luck to any company taking such high risk investment during a global economic meltdown. Supersonic flight won’t be accessible to the masses for decades to come. But there will always be enough multi-millionaires who would use such services.
This is where they will make big money and become a household name, supersonic travel.
Horrible Second Quarter
The whiplash though🙆🏿♀️💀
I hope it can shatter safety Concorde safety records also!
But is it more fuel efficient or is the idea to teleport people?
'The aircraft represents a long-term investment for Virgin Galactic, as it will take the company years to develop and test a supersonic jet. ' I've also got that kind of long term investment. Still at the back of an envelope stage currently, but the direction is clear.
WOW!!!
Why would anyone want to go to London in 2 hours. An absolute dreadful city.
Ooohhh, that’s pretty
You mean when they let Americans back into Europe, right? This technology could be outdated by then 🤦♂️
So where do they do the wind tunnel testing? And the engine testing?. Engine integration? Flight testing? Hydrogen fueled?
Go Virgin Galatic.
After how many failed test?
Yea ok
Plebians everywhere.... REJOICE!
No thanks!
Is the Turbulence more intense at 2,300 mph
Who is going to fly it? Who would work for Branson now?
how does human body respond/react to that? is it safe to do that to humans or their pets traveling? just asking.
Talk about Mach speed
Flying in airplane is just like spreading Covid19 viruses hence no flying to be safe!
America wouldn't let Concorde run a profitable service. Said it was too loud. Sour grapes.
Yawn 😪😪😪 I am still waiting for Virgin Galactic to deliver a fraction of what it announced more than a decade ago.
Not sure catering to those not able to afford their own jet, or merely impatient, is viable.
That would be great who wants to sit for that long 8 hrs compared to 2 hrs ?
You can haul ss to the airport where you'll be stuck in customs bc we're banned from entering the country. 🤣🥲
That's great but there's no such thing as business travel anymore. So there's that.
Sounds like a step backwards from Concorde- faster yet so few passengers.
Same as the old concord
SpaceX did Florida to New Zealand in 37 minutes. 😏
Bet that will be really cheap
