What did they seek? An even tone quality in every register and the ability to project while soloing with a large orchestra. Fine instruments are constructed so that a player can more easily pull out a rich range of tones — what the competition's Executive Director Glen Kwok likens to a painter having 30 shades of blue to choose from rather than six.
The choices are proving their worth. Luke Hsu, the bronze medalist in the 2018 competition, has been playing both a 1781 Gagliano and the Ihle, which was strongly inspired byfrom his golden period. Now, Hsu says the latter's sound dazzles — especially on Romantic melodies like the second movement of Johannes Brahms' Violin Sonata No. 3.2006 Laureate Bella Hristova, who most often plays a 1655 Amati that's on loan to her, chose the Crowley to play outdoors for its stability.
No matter their sound, modern fine violins can't escape comparison to what many consider the best: those made in the 17th and 18th centuries in Italy.
