Industrial group Vinci’s earning slump makes a case for its $6.1 billion energy deal, writes CGAThompson.

Vinci on Oct. 20 said revenue for the first nine months of 2020 had declined by 12% year-on-year to 30.8 billion euros in a quarterly trading statement. The French industrial group predicted that full-year earnings would fall “significantly” as a result of the pandemic, although it expressed confidence in the company’s ability “to bounce back in 2021”.

Vinci on Oct. 2 said it had made a non-binding offer to buy Madrid-listed ACS’s industrial services unit for 5.2 billion euros. It offered to pay at least 2.8 billion euros in cash and the rest in shares for the division, whose business covers engineering and public works activities, renewable energy projects and concession contracts. Madrid-based ACS said it would proceed with negotiations.
