'Vesper,' which opens in theaters tomorrow, takes well-worn dystopian young-adult tropes and makes them new again, and offers strong performances. Read on for our review, and to see the trailer.

VESPER Directed by Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper Out September 30 Vesper takes well-worn dystopian young-adult tropes and makes them new again—or at least more compelling than they seem on paper—through its sheer plausibility, an immersive atmosphere, and strong performances.

Vesper is a 13-year-old girl scrounging to survive in a post-apocalyptic landscape. The most pressing enemy is food insecurity, brought on by earlier events but maintained by men like Vesper’s neighbor Jonas , who relishes the power he has over other, less-fortunate folks. Her bedridden father communicates through a homemade drone, which serves as her companion through the weird wasteland.

ADVERTISEMENT Vesper is a singular experience, blurring the lines between sci-fi and horror. The filmmakers trust the audience to work out the finer details of this seemingly timeless dystopia themselves, which is especially refreshing in today’s exposition-heavy blockbuster landscape. At times, the film feels like an extended prologue to a larger tale, if only because it introduces viewers to a world demanding further exploration. This review originally appeared in BUST's Fall 2022 issue.

Hocus Pocus 2 Review: This Witchy Sequel Doesn't Hold A Candle To The OriginalHocusPocus2 Review: This Witchy Sequel Doesn't Hold A Candle To The Original I don’t think anyone was ever expecting it to be anywhere as good or iconic as the original so let’s not set that as the bar. all I need is for the film to be nostalgic, fun & have a good story. My expectations aren’t high at all Of course, because Disney is trying to squeeze every drip of nostalgia juice from old favorites. Too many remakes, sequels and spin offs.

‘Hocus Pocus 2’ review: When ‘twice as good as the original’ means less than you thinkWhat’s halfway between trick and treat? That’s HocusPocus2 , writes critic phillipstribune, who calls it 'twice as good as the first one,' which he 'didn’t like at all.' When HocusPocus was released in 1993, movie critic Johanna Steinmetz gave it one star. “Hocus Pocus” is harmless, but it’s about as much fun as celebrating Mardi Gras under the influence of candy corn, Steinmetz wrote. Read the full review: phillipstribune Watching it now. It’s not nearly as good as the first.
