'This is the first time that positively charged carbon ions have been observed escaping from Venus' atmosphere,' researcher Lina Hadid said.

Our closest planetary neighbor Venus keeps leaking carbon and oxygen into space, mystifying scientists.Carbon and oxygen, among other gases, are being stripped from Venus' atmosphere after being accelerated to speeds fast enough to escape the planet's gravity, according to a new study in the journal Nature Astronomy. This strange phenomenon was spotted by the European-Japanese BepiColombo space probe as it skimmed past Venus on its way to Mercury in 2021.

'These are heavy ions that are usually slow moving, so we are still trying to understand the mechanisms that are at play. It may be that an electrostatic 'wind' is lifting them away from the planet, or they could be accelerated through centrifugal processes,' Hadid said.Venus is thought to have at one time been more like Earth, possessing liquid water on its surface many millions of years ago before its surface became so hot.
