The majority of Venezuelans are turning themselves in to Border Patrol; some are asking for asylum in the U.S., reports the El Paso Times.
Florida, of course, is a natural destination for Cuban and Venezuelans because South Florida is home to the nation's largest Cuban-American and Venezuelan-American communities. DeSantis’ actions angered Venezuelan-Americans in Florida. At a press conference Thursday in Doral, a city just outside Miami that has largely grown and been developed by Venezuelan and South American immigrants, Venezuelan-American groups and business leaders ripped DeSantis for what they called a"morally repulsive" political stunt.
The sharp rise in Venezuelans trying to seek refuge in the U.S. is rooted in Maduro’s failure to boost the economy of this oil-rich nation. Since 2014, millions of Venezuelans have left the country because of a dire economic crisis that has choked the country under the Maduro regime. Years ago,"there was gasoline; you could have whatever car you wanted, whatever clothes you wanted,"she said, sitting on a pile of blankets by the border city's Greyhound station."We had our little house. Now it's worth nothing. The car is worth nothing."
The UN refugee agency reports that Venezuelans leaving the country “are increasingly vulnerable” and “struggling to survive,” and that the exodus is almost certain to continue.
