The cases have occurred in 16 states over the past two months, with many of the injured rushing to emergency rooms with difficulty breathing and other symptoms. No deaths have been reported, but some patients were so ill they spent days in intensive-care units on mechanical ventilators, the health authorities said.
“Investigators have not identified any specific product or compound that is linked to all cases,” the CDC said in a statement. The Food and Drug Administration said it is testing e-cigarette products that the patients used. The new cases indicate there is much to be learned, and suggest that there can be severe consequences to vaping, particularly using products that are unlabeled or whose contents aren’t known, tobacco researchers said.
The patients suffered coughs, fevers, chills and shortness of breath, said Tom Haupt, the department’s respiratory disease epidemiologist. Some lost up to 30 pounds the month before they were hospitalized, he said. Most of the patients were hospitalized, with a few requiring mechanical ventilation in intensive care, Mr. Haupt said. It isn’t yet clear whether any sustained permanent lung damage, he said.
The Kings County Department of Public Health, in rural central California, said it identified eight patients between ages 18 and 60 who developed lung illness after vaping products with CBD oils they had bought from unlicensed vendors.
So this is the new reefer madness huh?
I used to do that back in 2014 but quit. There are tinctures and edibles besides vaping weed. For nicotine users.... idk 😐 I hope you quit😇
I’m not sure I’m buying the implication here if vaping caused this kind of havoc we would’ve heard about it before now (not that the numbers are especially frightening here compared to overall usage statistics)
If marijuana was legal, then people wouldn’t have to buy off the black market. These hospitalizations are the governments fault.
Duh!
Know someone that ended up in the hospital overnight with this. Thought it was a viral infection at first and then things got worse. Still not 100%
From what I've read, these people were vaping non-standard marijuana compounds, not regular vape juice. Don't know if this is included in the article because of paywall, but it certainly should be.
considering such a low percentage of people who vape are going into the icu, perhaps more regulations to ensure what the hell's actually in the cartridges is more in order then indicting the entire industry
Well ya, when you use 30+ niccotine you are inhaling waaay more than a normal cogarette
Ban all this crap NOW.
Not a proponent of vaping, but 150 hospital cases out of the number of vapor users seems quite low, if it is due to OTC products. Have they analyzed what these cases are putting into their devices? Could be specific to a unique item.
Vaping could put you ICU with permanent lung damage ..... Americans needs to go back to safer tobacco products for their nicotene......
Well considering how many do vape, that is a fairly low number. trying to spread fear on behalf of big tobacco eh? Not that I have anything against tobacco, but your shilling is painfully obvious.
Amazon is burning down
