They saw the operations and mechanics up close during a STEM workshop, led by three-time Olympian Scott Shipley, who helped design the facility.
The students were the first to take part in the workshop at Montgomery Whitewater, which opened last summer. “We’ve got these Olympic team trials going on at the same time we are bringing students out from local schools,” Shipley told Action 8 News. “We’re letting them see what that Olympic lifestyle is like, see some of the kayaking going on, but we’re also teaching them some of the science and technology that goes into artificial rivers like this one as well as the Alabama River and that natural ecosystem that is created by that.
Montgomery Whitewater is hosting the U.S. Open Whitewater Championships. People from the across the U.S., Canada and Spain are competing in kayaking and canoeing events. Participants included those who are casual racers, as well as the country’s top whitewater athletes, including Olympians and National Team members.
The 120-acre outdoor recreation complex opened last July just off Maxwell Boulevard between Interstate 65 and Maxwell Air Force Base on the southern bank of the Alabama River. It currently offers whitewater rafting and kayaking with other outdoor activities planned in subsequent phases.
