in the Conference USA tournament, coach Patrick Hallmark started to believe the Roadrunners had a chance.
But after arriving in San Antonio around 4 a.m. and reconvening to watch the unveiling of the tournament selections at 11 a.m., UTSA learned that it had not been selected to the field of 64, falling short of the school’s first NCAA Tournament at-large selection in any sport with a similar postseason structure.
UTSA’s chances were hindered by a tumultuous weekend of conference tournaments, with as many as eight unexpected champions pushing regular-season standouts to at-large bids. “The whole year, we competed against good opponents, whether they were Stanford or TCU or Southern Miss,” UTSA outfielder Ian Bailey said Sunday. “We always put our best foot forward and came out victorious in most of those games. I think that puts a good mark on our record. So, looking back on our season, I think there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be in the tournament.”
When the final regional announcement passed with UTSA still ignored, the Roadrunners mostly continued to stare up at the screen in silence for a few minutes before Hallmark stepped forward to address the group. The Roadrunners close the year one game shy of a program-record win total, missing out on what would have been UTSA’s fourth NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2013.
