Editorial: 'For more than two years now, officials at all levels and in all branches of our government have missed chance after chance to get a handle on this rapidly spreading and evolving virus.'

have so proudly stood against the kind of vaccine mandates that civilized society has used for generations to effectively wipe out everything from polio to diphtheria to the measles.

Not that Biden is blameless in all this. Seeing the obvious reluctance of so many people to get, or to require, vaccinations has only now moved him to push to make tests andto everyone. It’s the right thing to do, but months late. “This pandemic has proven to be anything but predictable,” Wilson said. “We all recognize that so we need to be very flexible and adaptable as we move through this current wave.”

Wow. I can’t believe I just wasted my time reading this. Forcing people to go nowhere? Didn’t we fight wars against other countries that did this kind of thing?

Illicit drugs must be legal in Utah for your editors to publish this piece of dribble. Smoking crack would surely justify in y'all's minds that using the military on your own citizens would be ok. Really?

Most everyone I know who is vaccinated has recently got the Wuhan, except for the ones who smoke cigarettes. We really should be forcing the non smoking vaxxed folks to stay home.

Or they realized the government has better things to do then fight the common cold

What's the misinformation now?

So much wrong with this editorial. Actually, there's very little right with it.

👆False Appeal to Authority, Hasty Generalization, Bandwagon, and Appeal to the People Fallacies👆 NOTE: It’s the year 2022 and people who wrote this article are STILL referring to Nobel Prize-winning medicine w/over 3 decades of proven safety (I.e. Ivermectin), “horse dewormer”.

The Huntsman family should be held to account for this. This is an implicit call to violence against unvaccinated Americans. Abhorrent, unconscionable and un-American. Shameful, Utah

Dis you? Do you want to invest in yellow stars to hand out, or what? Can we please get names of all on your board who approved this?

Lock us in our homes? My second amendment argues otherwise….

Wow, just wow. Using the National Guard to basically imprison citizens?

“Hey let’s write an article about using our Military to lock people up that don’t listen to us! Ya that’s a Swell idea!” W.T.F

Since the vaccine doesn’t actually prevent the spread of Covid and the vaccinated are spreading it too, why should unvaccinated be forcefully confined to their houses? Oh that’s right because the people who want that are Communists.

Nazis

Fake media puts dollars above intelligence & lives

I would imagine the next great Trib Editorial would be to round up the unvaccinated and put them in internment camps. There is historical context for that...right Trib?

Sorry, which Democrats do you include in this accusation? As far as I'm aware, ONLY Republicans run this state, ONLY Republicans have pushed disinformation and lies about COVID, and ONLY Republicans have politicized the issue.

At least the LDS church run politicians didn't have the National Guard prevent those who drink alcohol from leaving their home. Wish they had though...it would prevent DUI's right Trib?

If the unvaccinated cant leave home it would mean they can't receive medical attention so let them die in their homes? Many unvaccinated are low income minorities. They can't afford to have groceries delivered. Let them starve? They can't work from home to pay rent. Racist Trib.

Pulitzer Prize winning journalism at its finest. If the Trib was running the state we would have a police state preventing the unvaccinated from leaving their homes. Meaning they won't go to work. Who will serve the Trib elite their food, bag their groceries, pick up their trash?

Fascist editorial board right here.

Did anyone have “Tribune advocates for fascism” on their 2022 Bingo card?

Wow...What an astonishingly Marxist, Facist article that has no place in American journalism

Try telling the truth and let the chips fall where they may

Thank you for vindicating precisely why the 2nd Amendment exists!! 'Were Utah a truly civilized place . . . going as far as to deploy the National Guard to ensure that people without proof of vaccination would not be allowed, well, anywhere.'

Try this shit and you’ll eat the barrel of an AR15 from thousands of Utahns

You're not governing unless you're using the national guard to keep people in their homes

Interesting how the Editorial Board had no problems calling Trump a fascist and yet they are okay with calling the National Guard to check vax records.🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

Who gave this article the go ahead? Who would want to impose Martial Law for Covid? Let me guess the writer is a liberal trying to force change in Utah. Guess what Utahn's believe in Freedom and Family period. Segregation has no place in our state. freedom

1kyleshorten Utah is still Hungover from Trump!

I think the national guard should be brought in and arrest every fool of a 'journalist ' who was involved with this piece. This would of course violate the Constitution but hell they don't give a shit about it why should I.

Really, Trib? Pathetic and disgusting on your part. And the National Guard wouldn't stand a chance. Go ahead - put that idea to the test.

If using the National Guard against your neighbors is not only a thought but a real suggestion, maybe you should just move.

Good grief. This is next level crazy. What on earth is wrong with this newspaper? This is completely unacceptable rhetoric.

Does Utah even have leadership?

I’m sorry but this isn’t in anyway helpful. Talk of military enforcement is wrong and foolish and just handing trumpers a gift. Be smarter.

Not exclusively Republicans failing to govern? That’s about all we have in Utah.

Ummm sorry but to far

Great editorial. Wish we had real leadership during these difficult times.

I never thought we'd be here now. I miss morals, values, leadership, and going to sleep at night in peace. Why do they hate drs, facts, science, and truth unless they need them. We invested everything to be here, Not for this. Scared and scarred.

What the Salt Lake tribune editorial team should be asking themselves:

Wow! Soldiers in the streets should be the last solution to any problem. Covid does not cross the threshold of urgency for this type of response.

And this is UTAH

I am not anti-vax, I received the vaccine. But I am forced to ask since when did the concept of a civilized people start holding hands with a jackboot saying 'papers please.' ...

I think we should deploy the National Guard to shut down corporate media outlets that spread terror and misinformation. We can start with you guys. Just kidding, this is America -- we should not use the military to shut down disagreement from our fellow citizens. Are you insane?

You really think that the National Guard should be used to imprison citizens with whom you disagree? I'm glad we have leadership standing in the way of your authoritarian impulses.

Martial Law? (this is what you're advocating, believe it or not) For Covid? C'mon this is too far. I'll still support you, but please do better.

Omg I didn't think I could hate Mike Lee more than I did before but after his Sarcastic, smug, Maga response to Cox I want to vomit.

The biggest paper in Utah is suggesting the governor “deploy the National Guard to ensure that people without proof of vaccination wouldn’t be allowed, well, anywhere.” There aren’t enough adjectives to express how dystopian & unconscionably fascist this idiotic suggestion is.

Touched a nerve with the legislature here. Good job!

Seek mental help.

Mormon Cox (pun intended)

I wish Utah had leadership.

For all their talk of hating shutdowns, they’re sure happy to serve up soft, rolling, micro-shutdowns that trigger hardship for families, workers, small businesses, and education systems, as well as inordinately draining hospital and health care resources.

when you give your heart and soul to corrupt political party it might bite you in the butt Utah

It's about time people swallow the hard pill that COVID is now endemic, just like the common cold. This was not avoidable, regardless of government policy. The sooner we swallow that pill, the sooner we can put politics and fear aside and get on with life.

You forgot to mention that every one of these elected officials who are failing us on covid will be reelected, simply because they have the magical 'R' after their names.

Live look at the Trib Editorial Board.

I knew Cox wasn't going to be a strong leader, but this absolutely lack of a spine was beyond what I imagined

Civilized societies don’t deploy the military to enforce compliance with government mandates….that is what totalitarian governments do. It’s also not thought through. What will the National Guard do if people don’t comply? They can’t act as law enforcement Posse Comitatus

But but but.....the vaccine!! And the boosters!! 'They' said get the vax and booster and i would be fine! Please....don't tell me they lied?!! My gov would NEVER lie to me...would they? Just wait until you see what else about those jabs they lied to you about.

Describe 'chance after chance' You have no true answers! Lockdowns and mask mandates don't work. Incase you forgot we did that willingly and guest what... here we are. Do you remember the 15 days. The Clorox word was a joking comment. There were no Clorox wipes because they work!

I’m glad this writer’s definition of “civilized place” isn’t reality. People like this should never been allowed authority over others. Deploying the nation guard to stop riots was too far for people like this, but they want to use it for vaccine mandates? Sic semper tyrannis

The National Guard line was a mistake in an otherwise defensible essay. And Utah has among the least number of deaths per capita among the 50 states, and is still has good numbers if you look at deaths per 65+ residents. But yes, all adults should be vaccinated & mask up!!!!!!!

SL-trib woke bubble of hate, fear, blame.

Now science is finding this in lab results and this point it might be worth looking into…

Utah, the only state that its government is telling its SICK citizens to NOT get tested. The only state where they don’t have capacity to test thousands of people. Tell me you failed without telling me you failed! What a disgrace! GovCox LGHendersonUtah 👎🏼👎🏼

True that, GovCox came out swinging at first then just suddenly laid down and started contradicting the UtahDepOfHealth. Now look where we are.

You mean they’ve been blowing a common cold out of proportion and programming the weak minded into believing their bullshit!

But, aren't Cox and his wife praying for us to do the right thing? Thank you Gov for your prayers which are helping keep our Covid numbers down.

How would you fix it? You seem to be an expert so do tell, what would you do?

I'm literally coming to visit salt lake in a few days. This would scare me if I wasn't come from Georgia

👏👏👏👏👏

They would rather golden idol the economy like the church says to do.

They are guilty of malfeasance. No business would keep a manager that so poorly managed resources, no grad school would pass a proposal that inflicted so much systemic harm, government officials wouldn’t allow other branches to do so unless they were in collusion. Malfeasance 💣

SL-trib laughable

Their 1 job is the health of their community. If they’re unwilling to do their jobs they need to resign immediately. Why are we tolerating this?

gov glitch..........Utah

Complete surrender. Shameful.

There is no leadership in Utah. There is a mob of clueless ideologues throwing their hands up into the air in the face of disaster.

Patbagley Ok, how do you convince obtuse people to do the right thing? It's easier to fool someone, than to tell them they've been fooled. - Mark Twain (probably)

They've surrendered because The Tribune says they have right ?

Patbagley That’s what happens when you follow an authoritarian madman for your public health advice.

People of Utah must know what their police officers are doing, the Editorial Board writes“Policing works best when the public grants trust to the police. That trust is inherently fragile ... If law enforcement executives erect too many barriers to transparency, we may find our political masters pulling them down.”

If you have symptoms, you likely have COVID, Utah health official saysUtah is quickly running out of COVID-19 tests after giving nearly 50,000 tests per day while omicron surges through the state, Gov. Spencer Cox said Friday. But he does nothing about it. Like once a month he just posts a video saying 'we need to mask up, take vaccines, so our health care workers aren't overwhelmed.' But then when they ask him about a masks mandate he says no we won't have one. So what is after 'strongly urge'? Is he going to 'sincerely plea' or maybe even 'profoundly beg' people to start taking things seriously? Giving lots of thoughts and prayers that these so called leaders, especially Cox, start succumbing to Covid. Is not real until they start dying off.

If you have symptoms, assume you have COVID, Utah health official saysDr. Leisha Nolen, state epidemiologist, said Utahns should assume they have COVID-19 if they have symptoms and stay home and away from others for 5 days while symptomatic. The state is also pausing its school test-to-stay program. People should also assume they have Covid if they are asymptomatic and stay home forever. What a fucking joke They're pausing test to stay and telling people not to test but then schools are using the positive tests as a gauge of whether the school should remain in person or not. How does that make any sense?

Utah leaders allow schools facing COVID-19 outbreaks to briefly move onlineUtah schools facing outbreaks — or schools where officials decide “the risks related to in-person instruction temporarily outweigh the value” — can now move online for up to one week. Did we not decide online classes turn kids into zombies or something else terrible? Oh, forgot, Utah pretzel logic. It’s getting ugly. So is it for 4 days? Or is it until this surge is over? I’m confused.
