For Brooklin Walker, it is not her choice to wait to have children. She and her husband Darren have been trying to start their family since they got married in 2017.She discovered she has a medical condition that affects her fertility, which requires a lot of medications and costly treatments. She is not alone.According to a 2018 report by the University of Utah, infertility affects 10-20% of women and men in Utah.In fact, the struggle hits home for 2News reporter Kristen Kenney.
“It was five years of darkness, tears, and praying will we ever have a kid,” said Allie Coutts who began the process five years ago.“It’s thousands and thousands of dollars to pay just for medications and the treatment itself,” said Brooklin. Sunny and Eric Hafen spent $85K on their fertility journey, but despite seven years of financial hardship and pain, she said it was 100 percent worth it.
“I tried to tell myself it would be ok if we didn’t become parents,” said Sunny Hafen in tears. “But every single day it’s everything I dreamed it would be.”After five years of fertility treatments, Allie now has a six-month old baby girl. And for Brooklin, she continues her fight. “It’s the hardest thing I have ever done but if it is going to work," she said. "It will be more than worth it for me; I am going to keep trying."
