President Hartzell says he ordered an end to the pro-Palestinian demonstration at UT because he had seen these sit-ins turn into camp-ins elsewhere and he worried about a long-term occupation disrupting campus operations.
But some faculty say they warned Hartzell that using force to preserve order on campus could actually make the situation more dangerous. In acirculating after the Wednesday protest, the Texas chapter of the American Association of University Professors said, “President Hartzell needlessly put students, staff and faculty in danger,” adding, “the president has shown himself to be unresponsive to urgent faculty, staff, and student concerns. He has violated our trust.
, but the call escalated on Wednesday when the university called on DPS troopers to end the pro-Palestinian demonstration that conservative leaders widely called "pro-Hamas." And among the voices on campus now calling for Hartzell's ouster, he does have his supporters. UT Austin student Jasmine Re told CBS Austin, “I’d honestly like to thank Governor Abbott and President Hartzell and his administration for being so proactive and so reactive to all the violence on campus.”The University of Texas may try to put all this behind them, but another protest over the DEI staff cuts is planned for Monday.
