Jay Hartzell drew student pushback for DEI layoffs and arrests during campus protests over the war in Gaza but GOP state lawmakers approve of his approach.

Jay Hartzell was just a year into his new role leading the University of Texas at Austin when he faced one of his first real political tests: an order from Gov. Greg Abbott prohibiting government entities from mandating face masks. It was May 2021, when COVID -19 vaccines were rolling out but not yet widely available.
