their economic diversity in the last few decades. But some have hit the “reality” that financial aid for low-income students is expensive, he said, and doesn’t necessarily result in higher college rankings by such organizations as U.S. News & World Report.

Over the last decade, USC has increased its share of low-income students to 21% — lower than UCLA’s 30%, but higher than Harvard’s 16%. And the university has expanded need-based grant funding by more than 60% since 2010, raising $635 million for additional financial aid as part of its $7 billion fundraising campaign, which concluded in 2018.But Folt said she aims to do even more.

Trenton Stone, USC student body president, said college affordability is the top issue of concern for many students who are struggling with rising tuition and growing student debt. The new financial aid policies would be a godsend to students like him, he said.

SamSchacher Where was this in '99?! Man, I wish schools had thought of this sooner bc most of MY generation is heavy in debt for buying into the 'You MUST get a college education to get anywhere in life' mantra. We're the ones royally screwed. :'(

Why don’t you include families making a little money, like $280,000 per year income?

USC pays its president $1.9M per year, the Provost $968K, and Deans an average of $747K, and it has grown administrative employees 5x faster than enrolled students over the last 25 years. Most universities could easily make changes internally to make education affordable for all.

Tip of the iceberg. Student enrollment is about to plummet nationwide. In 5 years many major institutions will go under. Boom-based business planning will result in imminent collapse.

This is a lame attempt to recover from the disastrous admissions scandal! Not falling for it USC! Where’s the small print?

I did my college financing by joining the Army on active duty and picking a job they needed to fill. I also had my massive $550/month paycheck reduced to help fund my college savings plan for IF I survived and IF I got accepted to a school. It builds character. I recommend it.

Does it matter if they are Whites? Asking for a friend.

I really appreciate this commitment. I was the first person in my family to go to college and I applied to only public college that offered me scholarships/loans/work for tuition-job opportunities.

Is it alright if they are Whites. Asking for a friend.

I bet families will turn down a raise so they stay under the threshold. Or hide the money from the government. Great motivation

WHERE DO I SIGN UP

Must be nice

Just wait for the various hammers to drop... One is already falling. Hearing now that transfer students are NOT eligible!!

I’m asking for a pay cut and wage freeze once my first son graduates HS.

What is this? The Aunt Becky scholarship?

Is there a law in CA that requires parents to contribute $$ towards their child’s college education?

drodriguez2488

Only took the CSU system 20 or so years to do something about high tuitions? Not going to get a 'good job' for many...

While they jack up tutuion for those who make more than $80k a year

Cost of four year degree: $77,459 x 4 = $309,836 is still out of reach. Time for coursera or udemy degrees. affordabledegree

Congrats ! Charge the middle class more to pay for this. Well done usc

Better idea: stop charging too much! Ridiculous waste

This is wonderful news!

Free tuition doesn't equal free ride completely. ..Still have to pay room/board & all other fees. In Mass, we have Adams scholarship which does the same thing if students PLACE WELL on the MCAFEE exam. Many parents & students are shocked this credit/waiver is worth at most 2500

Didn’t read the article. Does it explain how this is afforded by the university?

Awesome stuff!

So all i have to do is move to LA and i get a free education?

Good job USC.

Great job USC... FightOn USC USCTrojans

That is nice

And the family that makes $80,001? They are on the regular tuition schedule?

Lori Loughlin when she hears about this

Where was this in 91. 🤦🏽‍♀️

iApprove 💯✔️ Although, I can hear some people say [as I have heard them say before] 'Why should they get free education when I had to pay? Nobody ever gave me anything. I had to work & sacrifice & pay my own way. People have it too easy. Everybody wants handouts.' Sit TF down!

State tax increases + increased tuition for the other 2/3 student population. GREAT JOB CALIFORNIA

Sounds like a nice gesture

Wow 👏👏👏

I feel like we should be thanking Lori Loughlin for her generous $500K donation.

A step in the right direction

kiimmyyyC

Nothing like a little college admissions scandal by rich people yo get USC to throw out some PR crumbs for the 'poor'

What good is 100% free? Instill some responsibility by making them have some debt. Paying off $50K over 10 years keep people honest.

Fight on, struggle less! ✌️

They capping 🤔

Do I have to be on the 'rowing team'?

lifeguardsai

I feel like a politician has a similar idea for everyone? Who could that be?

Great! So many children from low-income families don’t even bother applying to universities like this because they know that the expense is far too much. It’s about equity, peeps. 👍🏼

AulaniFreitas USC was part of the college scam with Lori Loughlin and others. It's a public relations bullshit story.

Is this for Campus Students Only? If not, next question, does this apply to everyone?

So it means they have been seriously over charging? Money has to come from somewhere...

What 👀 I’m considering transferring here now

Nice for some, and of course the college will be flooded with applicants.

Progressive

Great idea to adopt BernieSanders idea of tuiti9n free college, even at an elite private school. Great idea BernieSanders!

Is this for law school too?

And automatic admission for $500,000 donors...bonus points if the student can row a boat.

what if you make $80,001 a year

Is it in state only?

USC is corrupt just lie the entire university system. You’ll see soon. They know it is coming.

Real question is there a change in policy for non-traditional students that meet the income guidelines? Or is it for recent high school grads only

How many entrants a year under this program, 10?

This is good news from USC.

UC system been doing this with their blue and gold scholarship, try again

Tuition is probably one of the least expensive aspects, lol

aanggelicahh

It would be nice for them to also set tiers for support. If you’re making $90k, you should pay the CSU rate. $120k, the UC rate, etc.

That’s a lot of free tuition. People know how to manipulate the system. My son spent about $200,000 for his USC undergraduate degree

This is wrong. Families don’t work to get more then 80K. It is unfair who is making more than 80K but no home. It encourages families to take divorce and show less than 80K. It seems there are many stupids in administration.

Wait.... there it is, the sound of the rest of the students’ tuition going up, or their parents taxes.

Pardon?

ALL SUBSIDIES should be GONE frpm the 'BS HIGHER ED Scholls! FAKE NEWS===LATimes, NYTimes & alike. 🇺🇸Trump2020🇺🇸

What a joke. I'd take 'ALL SUBSIDIES' from all higher BS education. FAKE NEWS LATime NYTimes & alike!

mssenator Does it matter what shitty 90’s sitcom or shitty 90’s clothes their parents made? AuntBecky EatTheRich

does this cover the money used to bribe to get admission to USC

Ok, I’m so applying for this. Yay! For sure I will get in ! I’m super studious! The goal was UCLA BUT this sounds like a great opportunity. Unless, I get full scholarship at UCLA, which I'm doubtful of.

bet

These are great news, and a lot of talented kids will benefit from it. However, I’m wondering if the scandal for the famous and rich in which they bribed USC so their spoiled brats could get accepted has anything to do with this decision. I’m 100% it does.

What about families making 80,001?

Now that’s what I call free education

Hopefully the money comes from their own coffers and not tax payer funds.

Good step but probably not enough... Curious about how this may impact acceptance rates too

this is a good start but doesn’t help families with multiple kids close in age with income over $80,000 i.e. 3 kids at USC for 3 years is $223,000/yr. So a family income less than $500,000 puts the family under, at or near national poverty level if paying full tuition! 😳

In other news, cost of USC tripled over the last year...

michaelmalice high school 2.0

It will still cost that student $20k per year after tuition to attend USC 😬 How much is a USC degree really worth? Probably worth more in some specific areas of expertise but def not all. $77k per year to attend doesn’t seem like a good investment when comparing other options.

Oh wow awesome

Bamadega My daughter is on her way.

while those making above 80k pay twice as much

Nothing is free so who pays for this?

This is great. But someone has to pay this. Are professors taking pay cuts? Support staff? How about the president of the University? Are they cutting programs? No, tax payers are paying for this. And all the while S. Cali., the compassionate state has a huge homeless problem. 🙄

I wish I lived within the area that this is accessible to.

How about fire helton first?

Tax payers and boosters subsides others tuition... fixed that for you

CFO COO Steve Lopes USC employee for 35 years gave his son a athletic scholarship. VarsityBlues Corrupt USC_mikebohn BrandonSosnaUSC PresidentFolt

This is great, but it’s also like seeing the item that you just bought at full price is suddenly on sale. USC

Sounds promising for qualified kids. Getting a USC acceptance 20 yrs ago was an accomplishment for me, except my family could not afford the $30k tuition in the mid-90s. That being said, the college admissions process is significantly harder now than it was back then for me.

Onward Bernie movement.

cool

Why’d I have to be graduating this year?

Hopefully it works for my son. He applied and is waiting for the answer.

Great ....13-16th grade

KarenGarcia3940 we at the wrong school

Now they're having to pay people to stay in California. The rest of us are shipping our homeless to you on buses everyday. Hahaha

This work for masters students?

O.k well my family makes less than 40 thousand sooooo where tf is my free tuition

What about my friends who are paying full price and sacrificing their wants and needs to ensure their child can go to USC? This is total bullshit.

Kiwberlym we’re moving to Cali for sure now lol

luvlylei

👏👏👏this is huge!!!

And herrrrrrrre come the assholes screaming that they’re disadvantaged because their parents made too much money.

i can't read the article so i don't know the details 🤷‍♂️

Not sure how I feel about this... A 4 year undergrad degree at USC with no financial aid costs: $247,940. If your family makes $81,000, then how does the math still work out? How is a degree worth more than $100,000 total for anyone? (not just USC, all schools need to answer)

Finally!

Why not just make tuition overall cheaper 🤷🏻‍♀️ that way everyone benefits

wow nice

This is a step in the right direction for higher education... not the “Free for all” drivel BernieSanders and ewarren have been peddling. FightOn

As the conversation regarding subsidizing tuition costs for public higher education continues, it seems that maybe private universities will instead take the lead in this area. Already, some professional schools like certain medical schools have declared themselves tuition-free.

ninergirlca Who’s paying the teachers ? The tooth fairy?

Just from cali

BS so if you work hard and go to college, you will have to pay for your kids to go to college, but if you don’t, your kids will have their college paid for. Discrimination lawsuits will happen.

discounts must not be based on family income . College students are aged 18 and above are usually on their own , doing part time jobs and parents just helping out on transition and living expenses USC

FightOn

Bravo

Well in that case....✌️

PeteTheKnight should I apply

Side note: California has gentrified their state so that if you make under $100k you can’t afford to live there and have moved out of state anyway.

Bullshit

My family makes 180K according to taxes. I guess I know what I have to do.

Great, more loopholes that will get exploited by those that lie. Look at the value of the home they reside in before giving away free education. I see it a lot, all these assholes taking advantage of programs because their parents don’t show the cash their businesses takes in

USC USC_FB Alas reparations

How much money do rich people pay for their kids to attend that school without being actually qualified for it. Got to be the only reason they are doing this.

My kid is on disability, I'm a single parent, teacher, low pay, no homeowner and this new policy gives us nothing. Utter USC BS.

The result of policies like this is to create a situation where families or individuals try to “appear” as broke as possible to the government in order to secure the free goodies and handouts. It never works as intended.

This is wonderful and will help many children who aren’t from wealthy families

Trying to cover up their scandal of taking money from the rich just like every Ivy League and rich college out there. Colleges who want money are bad because they see no real value in students if they require lots of money. Smh

Can I get some money back?

Umm I’m your grad student and my family and I make a total of less than 28k a year....do I get anything?

Dumbest thing I’ve heard of yet . Middle class need not apply

Finally I can go to film school

Poor. You again give a person a reason to not try harder to make more money.

This is great! I’m starting to look at these things with a 7th grader... FightOn

Look what guilt can do 🤣 USC usc

Lori Loughlin now that she’s unemployed 😂

They'll make it back elsewhere

Grad School?! jimmye1205 OffhandThought

Hope there is a phase out and benefits don’t just have a flat stop at 80k+

The question is how will the effect tuition rates?

Great! An investment towards knowledge is an invaluable gift to the future! 👏

5000 dollars in Student Fees probably.

Fight On

looks like i’ll be applying to USC for next fall 😅

Well good,if colleges want to eat the cost fibe, now dont raise tuition on others to try to cover

If a family makes 120k a year, and USC costs 60k a year, that means the family will be roughly be at 60k income for the year, whereas the family that makes 79k will have all the money to themselves...19k more in fact. Very good policy indeed.

Won’t Bernie and Warren make it free this time next year?

anyone want to go to usc ?

80k is upper middle class in Georgia. In California 80k is poor.

Berklee could never

if they announced this sooner, i woulda applied the fuck

this raises lazy people who expect everything for free or done for them, because then no ones earning anything or having any responsibility to work hard, if your parents get you in a big school you are more likely to work hard rather than knowing you have no consequences

Texas it’s ur turn!

I doubt if many students there from family making under $80,000. And i doubt if this doesnt make other students feel furious and stop going to this lucrative school

Hahhahhaahahha it means it will take in more international student to offset the cost Usc has been known as private school with a lot of money from oversea

According to USC_mikebohn, we don’t have any money, but perhaps the Trojan Athletic Fund can cover the program’s costs now that the donor website has been “fixed”?

This is wonderful news

THIS WAS AN OPTION THE ENTIRE TIME?!?!

You realize this is to repair the damage that was done because of the admissions scandals.....

What happens if I make 81,000?

So THIS is how they will get around the football scholarship limits...

Blessings

So who picks who can go? I'm assuming there's some kind of limit to the amount of people that can re-enroll. So who decides?

The deadline for admissions for Fall 2020 passed already!! It WAS Jan 15 😭😭😭😭 my son would have applied!!

Since tuition is 60k a year, that’s probably going to be for like 3 people. But thanks!

Well my wife would divorce me and i would become a single parent just to qualify

Families making between$80000 and $200000 are screwed. That is not a lot in CA. They will have to pay full price. The rich and the poor riding on the backs of the working middle class. Trust me the universes not sucking this up. The full pay families will pay the price.

Wow this is amazing! I wish I hadn’t just moved from Cali!!! 💔

What’s amazing is they think 80k is peanuts.

But USC will still accept the big donor money from the well connected elite so their offspring continue to get free passes.

Free

Is there any sort of pro-rating in this new formula or if your family makes 81k do you get nothing and end up paying full tuition which on some level has to be high enough to subsidize the tuition of the 1/3 of students who get the free ride?

Who's paying for this?

Good.

Lol

Sucks for people making 81k a year

Is this a good school?

Some families have dual incomes to put kids through college. Now one can quit immediately. So stupid.

Still wouldn’t be able to get in. Just saying.

Is this for anyone who gets in or just US Citizens? Are Illegals allowed to get free tuition if they qualify? Just making sure I understand the full parameters of this policy.

Is still _______ (white space)

And to think, all it took was a college admissions scandal 🤔

I drive behind a bunch of crappy CHEVY’s and TOYOTAS with “College Alum” around the license plate, while me driving my BMW 740 with no DEGREE. 😂👍🏽🌟🇺🇸🌟🇺🇸 degrees are TOILET PAPER.

Does this include grad school👀👀👀👀

What's the catch

One should never get a discount on anything for being tricked into borrowing a mortgage from the bank.

Paying college athletes AND cutting tuition !!!

This is awesome! Universities with their ridiculous tuitions caused this problem. This is great going forward how about all kids with crushing debt from USC last year OR a decade ago

as if a family making $80,001+ can afford their tuition

That’s awesome. South Carolina is such a great state. Go Gamecocks!!

Huge kudos to USC!! Although, I’m having trouble believing this, which is sad. But this is how we’ve been conditioned. (Much like ppl are conditioned to think only men can be president.) PresidentWarren

In other news room and board just went up $15000 a year.

How many kids have committed suicide from USC this year? They need to do something to attract people —they’re hiding something.

Wow how nice, after years of stealing 100’s of millions from families and offering young people worthless degrees they won’t be able to pay for till their 50 they’ve found a conscience. Stick to trade school kids.

The thing is, nothing is free in this world except the grace of God. Hardworking people will have their taxes increased for decisions they have not made. Passing the burden along. Sounds like Cali. Highest homeless population in the nation.

💯

contributing to the movement of bachelor’s degrees being near worthless, i see

This is Awesome! This is kind of what Bernie Sanders has been talking about. This is a big step in the right direction, now if only other colleges and Universities would follow, it would make life a lot easier for a lot people. Congrats USC!

It’s not free. It means someone else will be paying for it.

I checked USC is actually a whole bunch of “charities”which allows tax deductible “donations”2 be split into many smaller “donations”. So each dollar”donated”decreases the tax base. Therefore it gets “made up”by others paying higher taxes! Not exactly like that buy U get the idea

I would rather my kids go to trade school

FIU your move.

Wow this is great.

America: Forever fucking the hardworking middle class

News alert ...it’s never free. So people making 81,000 and up will pay and tuitions will rise for everyone else.

What about the students who’s parents make more than 80 grand is there education less important?

UCLA be like .

Silly Socialists. Somebody IS paying for this! Anybody know who? Philanthropists writing it off as a tax deduction? Taxpayers? Obviously teachers don’t work for free, ancillary staff is not working for free. Infrastructure does not stop needing maintenance. Something is fishy!

Aunt Becky hearing this news

Just proves colleges are way way overpriced

Every bartender in California will have their degree for free in four years despite most of them making more than 80k

So, how does the state of California which is teetering on the edge of insolvency plan to pay for this free college scheme ?

USC looking really homey now

Is that the out-of-state tuition income cap? Because...uh...yeah.

What’s the “terms and conditions” on these tuitions for families that are making under $80,000?

GREAT GESTURE BY USC. MORE SHOULD FOLLOW.

crystalll94

Nothing is free. This money came from somewhere.

Who is paying for this

I'm almost starting to think the financial risk over the reward of a Bachelor's Degree+ isn't really worth it nowadays. Meh, we'll see how this USC plan works out I guess..

Wish this was available when I applied and got in a long time ago

Sounds exciting but then earning 80K in LA is equivalent to homelessness

Is this offer exclusive to California natives?

There’s no such thing as free, so how is it being paid for?

Fight On!

More incentive to stay poor. Academic EBT.

Now this is Servant Leadership. Bravo USC.

They have to justify their recruiting techniques somehow.

Does this include masters programs 🧐🤔

TheProtoman20 EdralinYoung Oddishhhhh back to school?

But why NOT for transfer students?!? Many low-income students start at community college and live at home to save money. Why not help those who have done this?

Same for grad school? I think this is absolutely great. When I was a freshman my parents made 100,000 a year had another kid in college & two younger kids in school, but their EFC was 40,000. They didn’t have any money to help me or my brother out. We live in the Bay Area.

There’s no such thing as a “free lunch”. Other students will be subsidizing this who’s household incomes exceed $80,000.

Does that include transfer students ?

YES 💪🏾💯

🤔

So, you have two kids. One who’s family makes $300k and the other, $70k. One attends college for free. The other takes $100k in loans. They both graduate and get same paying jobs. One still has $100k in loans and the other has zero. Total BS! Everyone can take student loans!

Okay, but are they going they going to change the way they accept people.........?

I thought private companies are greedy and prey off the poor?

👀this is a steppp

My son won’t qualify for this plan but bravo to USC for doing this.

Lol. Yo so like basically 90% of California got free tuition now. Go get smart

Welp, looks like we have ourselves our college for my now 6 year old!

and look we did it all without Bernie's help

Meanwhile, families making over $80k will see a 100% increase in tuition at USC.

Listen to Leaked lil baby song from his NEW album “my turn”

Who’s paying for it?

Aww loves that

Seminoles FAMU_1887

Application: Family income - under $80K......

What if you make 85k & have 7 kids? USC has an 8 billion dollar endowment. Every college that receives any gov’t subsidies & has over one billion dollars in their endowment fund should make their school tuition free. USC will make this up By raising tuition on everyone else.

Lol my daughter is 10 where do I sign her up

Best news I've seen today 🙌🏽

A lot of colleges have seen a dramatic decline in applications. And most universities don’t even make money off your tuition.

High achieving high school students coming from families making $81,000 knowing they still have to take out $100k+ in student loans

YASSSS WELCOME TO THE CLUB FREETUITION

So my children will be punished because I have a job that pays okay money? This is fucked up.

ucsc but yall cant raise your pay? 🐸☕️ payusmoreucsc

One problem with this is that families that make $81,000 get fuccd.

I can’t believe such blatant income racism existed at this University for so long and they got away with it. Lock up all those rich people who lie to get their kids to go there.

As a recent USC grad with income that is not much over this mark, USC promised a lot of financial aid/scholarships and yet barely delivered anything merit-based or otherwise despite my high GPA. Bet like 5 people will get accepted into the program and this is just a PR move 🤷🏻‍♀️

Aunt Becky paying for these chaps

🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 BS it should be for any student no matter income. As long as they’re carrying a high grade point average and show dependability and a commitment. It’s like you get screwed if you make a little extra money. But then everybody else gets everything handed to them

This qualifies for out of state kids

josephamado2 transferring

Craaaaze

Well now I know where I’m submitting my transfer application to.

Fuck USC

The student interviewed will graduate USC with another worthless major, 'International Relations & Philosophy'. His parents are pissing away $77K/yr for a degree that has no market value.

ucla you seein this

So who pays for it then?

Sure give it the gen x crowd that feels everything is owed to them!

I really should’ve transferred when I had the CHANCE

Now for people that make over $80,000 the scheming will begin.

Wow

Wow. This is amazing. Thank you, PresidentFolt, for making USC more accessible to families making less than $80,000. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Ugh I’m currently a student making $-12,000 a year in student loans, does that count?

Can alums get a refund?

Well dang, does USC have an online sports management program?

USC is not a high academic school. Also, they have a very bad football team.

Dear USC... Where was this idea in 1980 when I was accepted but didn't have enough money to pay out of state tuition?

Amazing decision PresidentFolt. Proud to be an alum fighton

will this be available to students in the nursing program?

Under the financial aid program, which Stanford expanded in 2015, Stanford will continue to provide free tuition for typical parents with incomes below $125,000.

I've decided where my daughter is going to school!

👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿😎

But do they still take bribes?

The people with huge loans from the couple years before might be a tiny bit peeved lol

The problem I always have with these policies; How about a family making $83,000? How about families making 80k with one college aged student vs another family making 100k with 3 or more college bound kids...a total lack of consistency in these policies.

Aunt Becky just shit her pants

elviabloop

Gonna be a surge of single parents this month.

Why don’t they make college tuition progressive like taxes? I mean Lori Laughlin could pay $500k...let her! It can fund five other students!

Is that gross or net?

Ok but im not in California

Let me guess, now you will make it more expensive for students who don't qualify, even if you're making a penny more than 80k

What if you pay for college yourself but your parents make more than that?

Does this include grad school It should 😫

If you make under 80 grand you get indoctrinated into the Democratic Party for free or socialist

Calm down you still need to get in

What if my parents make $81,000 a year combined do I get anything?

This is incredible!

This is awesome! We need more of this because the idea of student loans/debt is a absolutely ridiculous! Bravo USC

Just another reason to stay home..... mom and pops make $85,000 a year but if kiddos can go to school for free one might as well stay home Bernie would be so proud!

This is so awesome. 🥺🥺🥺🥺💙💙 makes me wanna move across the country just to be able to attend and finish school with no worries about money.

Notice how the middle class need not apply...

This is great news! I wish that more colleges would do this, because then my mom wouldn’t be struggling to help me, and I wouldn’t have to spend the next 25 years paying back loans.

Paid for by the tax payers.

I wonder how many will take a pay cut to send their kid to USC?

Omg 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Who pays for it?

USC_Athletics It's a good start but compared to the cost of living in Cali, it should be raised to 150K. Oh and by the way Carol, fire Helton!

This is insane. 11 years earlier and I’m going to USC.....

Somebody had to kick start this finally it's usc. Though I want to know if this is a seriously genuine thought or reputation washing for their controversial college admission scandal with aunt becky ? I would like to see justice to the students who got in with great scores.

amazejeon not for transfer students 🥺😭

Finally they are selling that liberal snowflake college daycare for what it’s actually worth.

Where was this 5 years ago 🙃

😂🤣🤣😂😂now theyre giving it away!!! Too bad Felicity and Aunt Becky didn't wait a couple years!!

USC damn y’all really that desperate?

If this was around in 2015, I would've went to USC over Hampton! Just couldnt afford it...

USC_Athletics I received a scholarship to attend USC as a youth, and as a result of that education I now make too much money for my kids to qualify for this new program. Which I think is amazing and exactly the point. Good job USC!

Be careful. Western Carolina lowered in state tuition to $500 and now they can barely keep up with the influx of new students. It’s a good idea that can easily bite the school on their shiny metal ass

I feel badly for families slightly above this mark as it does nothing for them. Not sure why there can’t be a progressive tuition system where kids in families up to 150k pay relative to their income status rather than one group getting it all free.

This cracks me up. As someone that lives in one of the most affordable places to live in the USA, $80K is a nice income. In LA that’s nearly McDonalds wages

What if those making $80,100?

This makes sense, since a degree from USC is worthless.

989ced50780746a

'Free'. This means taxpayers pay for it.

This is good news. Hopefully it pushes forward for our brightest to attend a highly regarded University.

wilnerhotline Publicity stunt. They’ll bring them in for one year…Then cut them off and kick them out when they can’t come up with the money. I never trust evil. There’s an ulterior motive behind every move they make.

ok but is this only targeted directly towards freshmen, or people who are going to transfer as well?

I could actually go to USC now holy balls

Nothing is free btw. Tuition will go up for others, people will be losing their jobs because of cuts. Just remember that. It’s a systematic problem we have with the costs of college.

I_RefuseYou

Wow. Amazing! Good step in the right direction for students.

USC is going to be inundated with applicants. The need for this is so great there will be a run on the college. I hope the admissions office is braced for the impact.

Much better than being a fake member of the rowing crew

Eliminate student debt and USA will flourish within 4 years.

This will help out a lot of families. Hopefully other Universities will follow.

Cause I ain’t paying for someone else’s kids to go to USC If mine can’t

!!!

Good for the school to take ownership of the tuition issue instead of tax payers or students. The sharp rise in tuition was always a school issue.

If taxpayers are footing bill, then free for all right?

People seem to think of California of this super welfare state but it’s really not, it’s a healthy dose of very vigorous yet hospitable inclination to those willing to try at their max potential. It is rewarding, but nothing is guaranteed, anywhere really.. god bless California

Providing free education isn’t USC’s goal. There are heavy burdens even with this task, and there are heavy repercussions with rendering education as free. There are categories and elements to be met, to flourish it’s original intent. dilution of service occurs if not..

I guess enrollment at the indoctrination camp is slipping? DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE THEY WILL BE BRAINWASHED

nurseniceyes Who is q Who is Q who is QQQ?

This is a terrible idea.

How will this be paid for? Doesn’t seem right. Go to community college and save money. College is to learn not party...

Don’t forget they have an acceptance rate of only 11% so in the big picture it means nothing.

george_seh5

SelimaTate

So how about those who make $85k? Unfair

Start of a big movement hopefully

So who's footing the bill for the 'free' tuition?

Without Bernie? Who will actually pick up the tab?

IF you can get in...

first you gotta get in it was a 3.4 gpa now its gonna be a 3.8 outta jc.

Does anyone know if the would count for transfer and out of state students?

How many students a semester are they going to accept with free tuition

Free for people making under 80,000 and I’ll bet they raised everybody else’s

Nobody attending USC has a family making under $80,000 a year.

Okay nice now accept me into a program

Interesting. ['NOW they're offering this?!'-- Former student who left when upperclassmen financial aid did not materialize]

This is awesome! ❤️

Wow, tremendous.

This is going to help 1000 students out of 45k. Why not just lower the ridiculous tuition for everyone? I don’t think college should be free but it sure as hell should cost $100k

Sucks if you make $81k.

This is really good news 🙌🏼 more universities should do this wccmediawriting

Guess it's time to move for more education...wooooooo

This is great! -Clearly- equal education opportunities for young people is sorely needed

Crazy.

They specifically say families..but what if you live alone and you aren’t being financially supported by your parents or anyone and want to go to college? Does it still apply?

Does this include graduate students or is it undergrad only? Def asking for myself

Is this coupled with a « need-blind » admissions policy?

PresidentFolt you know it’s not too late to come back to Chapel Hill 🤷

Tuition or tuition and room and board?

Trying to save face?

The problem with FREE college and FREE stuff is SOMEONE actually has to pay the cost of it and eventually..... you RUN OUT of OTHER PEOPLE'S money!!! USC OtherPeoplesMoney Socialism FreeStuff FreeIsNOTreallyFree

Fantastic move. College cost is deterrent enough for many. Hope textbook costs and other needs can be reduced also.

What’s the point of being successful anymore in California. You can get everything you want just by being a loser.

i dont understand this like i think its a good thing but just because a family makes above a certain amount doesnt mean that theyre going to pay for the schooling of their child so why is that really fair to kids who get stuck in debt because they have a higher income household

Well that's nice for new applicants. Still think I made the right decision to go with another Architecture program. That decision was 90% made based on finances at the time, but it worked out for the best!

Omg wow I should have aapplIEDe LMAO

ripalfonso

These universities are so rich that there’s no reason why more schools couldn’t afford to drop their tuition by 75%. It’s outrageous that with all the modern technology they are unable to record lectures and offer everything online except for labs and reduce their workforce.

bUt hOw aRe we GoInG to pAY for It? 🥴 Every elite school could do this, they already sell spots to celebrities and other famous people anyway 🤷🏽‍♂️

Finally! SiSePuede

Instead pick a cheaper college. I don't buy a house or car I can't afford and expect others to help me pay for it! Or worse yet, expect to be given it for FREE! There are cheap colleges. There are expensive colleges. Choose wisely! Free isn't REALLY free!

Will they all be entering freshman year as members of crew?

DanielNewman California is America! Those other 49 states need to catch up!

Honestly this is very refreshing, GJ USC

Only 80G’s?

Nothing less American than punishing people that work hard and earn more. And punished TWICE because those hard workers are not only going to have to pay for tuition while others get it for free, but they're also going to have to pay MORE to cover the people that get it for free!

my mom makes less than $12k a year.... let’s gooo😳🙏

It’s what they owe for all the F*ckery that’s been going on there, probably, for years. PowerTothePeople

People are waking up to the debt scam that college is.

Too bad most college majors are useless in the current year. If you're an engineer or CS major, you should take it.

I think they are trying to find hidden gem walk-ons for the football team because of how bad their recruiting classes have been

And what about students who just graduated? 🤔

Guess I’m transferring

Didn’t go to USC because it was hella expensive. I’m happy that young people today won’t have to give up on their dream.

🤦🏽‍♂️

Middle class families make more than that. It’s not really helping the ones closer to 100. This is the same bs as Obama care. Middle class is still forgotten! People making 100,000 still cannot afford 65,000 tuiton a year!!!! Get real!

What if they make 81k

This is great but hopefully it doesn’t cause tuition to go up for everyone. It’s already expensive enough as it is.

One scholarship under these parameters?

USC is a privately funded university, so who picks up the tab for this free tuition?

I guess I'm moving to Cali! 😎

That must be nice

Good move on the break for homeowners bc their taxes go to your state. Bad move on free. If everyone chips in what they can no matter how small the price can go down for everyone. No need to squeeze out the middle class.

JironChristian so like...let’s get married so we can go to USC for free

What about families making $81,000...

That’s ok I’ll pay more fk$$!ng taxes Taxpayers sot hat they can

Excellent !! Hope other big schools will follow suit...

Pandering by PresidentFolt FireClayHelton FireMikeBohn FireCarolFolt BanishRickCaruso

BostonCollege

But you have to get accepted first, right? They just don’t take everyone. And does this count at satellite campuses too or just the main campus?

That’s Amazing !

Awesome

I would not want to live in California.

guess i’ll go to usc

Epic now I can attend only for the cafeteria food

This is awesome!!! So proud of my alma mater! ❤️💛❤️ USC FightOn ✌🏽

The amount of people who are legitimately bitter over this is astounding. YOU ARE MISERABLE.

Nice. Free 2-year community college grant then transfer in. I hope everybody in the county signs up.

So any kid that has parents that do ok for themselves but by no means rich or even well off are screwed because they still have to pay for their own school plus their price will be higher now to subsidize the free kids!!

My wife and I are still paying absurd student loan debt. We knew the decision we made and live with it, but please help future students avoid this mess.

This is funny. The program will have very strict guidelines and will be stupid competitive. USC already does a lot for under served communities through aid and such. This really feels like a PR push. Change admittance based on geography as higher qualifying factor and we can talk

This is great, USC read the writing on the wall, there greed must be checked.

From darkness comes light.

For most people, college is a waste of time and money!

I think this is great in certain situations but yet again for people that go above and beyond to better their lives have to see people getting a free pass yet again.

So what about a family making 83k is that full price?

This really next level amazing

Does this apply to International Students

Everyone is gonna be pissed when the households over 80k will be paying more for tuition now

What's the acceptance rate for student families making under 80k a year... zero percent ... publicity stunt 😂

ahhhh i love my state

Dope ness

What about UCLA?

Wow

Aren't all students financially poor, why not make it for all.

“FREE”

Wrong way to fix it

Nothing is free. Who is paying (or paying more) for it? Taxpayers? Other students? Robinhood FreeIsALie LiesMakeFakeNews TellTheWholeStory BadJournalism

I’m about to sign over my guardian right’s to my broke cousin in Cali for my child.

Great! Now buyout Clay Helton! USC_FB

Are my taxes about to increase🤨

This is a great reparation for the damage that their many, recent scandals have done to marginalized and disenfranchised groups.

Where was this in 2011

What if you make $80,100

Wow.

Crew Rowing advance to front of the line.

penn_state

michaelcrow ASU, maybe it’s time for you to take a lesson from our neighbors! Maybe a graduating workforce being saddled with crippling college debt from a subpar school is a BAD thing!

Families? Means married combined income or single parent? What about divorced...i see a loophole here

Bruh

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Nice, tuition is free for those but have u seen all the fees😱

So they raise tuition on everybody else to cover it?

To learn what though, How to be properly woke?

Have fun paying more you suckers who earn a good living!!

GovernorTomWolf why can’t PA/PA schools do half the stuff Cali does for higher learning?

Well I’m heading to LA

This is the benefit of law enforcement going after institutions based on corruption — the corrective swing of the pendulum to repair reputation. Now let’s pay attention to admission rates for families in this range, . (Also, how does this story not mention the scandal?)

Unfuqing believable. Middle class priced out yet again. You either gotta be her illegally, friggin poor as rocks or a friggin millionare to afford school. That folks is socialism at work. While they give the poor free tuition, the rest will pay even more.

80k is low income in Cali

Does that mean I get my money back?

Only good for illegal immigrants, not Americans..

I didn't go to USC because I couldn't afford it but would have under this plan. Nice to see other people have a chance.

les go

Fix the fuckin football team. Fight On!

Great news! 🎓 Does this include Graduate degrees too, or just Undergraduate degrees

I doubt USC will actually give anybody a break! PR story only!

It’s a joke. They are increasing tuition. They will use this as a justification to raise tuition fees. Democrats states are jokers.

Under 80 are you kidding? That’s not nearly enough. USC’s cost with room and board is $80,000 a year that means a family whose income is $150,000 a year would be spending 3/4 of their after-tax dollars per year at USC. That’s impossible.

Rowing team members, too?

See? We don't need socialism.

And I was almost done with photoshopping myself into rowing pictures...

And you see how many of the wealthy benefitted from it?...I may put it on my website.
