ROME.- The United States’ failure to contain the spread of the coronavirus has been met with astonishment and alarm in Europe, as the world’s most powerful country edges closer to a global record of 5 million confirmed infections.
“Don’t they care about their health?” a mask-clad Patrizia Antonini asked about people in the United States as she walked with friends along the banks of Lake Bracciano, north of Rome. “They need to take our precautions ... They need a real lockdown.
After Trump finally donned a protective mask last month, Speranza told La7 television: “I’m not surprised by Trump’s behavior now; I’m profoundly surprised by his behavior before.”With America’s list-leading 160,000 dead, politicized resistance to masks and rising caseload, European nations have barred American tourists and visitors from other countries with growing cases from freely traveling to the bloc.
Mistakes were made in Europe, too, from delayed lockdowns to insufficient protections for nursing home elderly and critical shortages of tests and protective equipment for medical personnel. The virus is still raging in some Balkan countries and thousands of maskless protesters demanded an end to virus restrictions in Berlin earlier this month. Hard-hit Spain, France and Germany have seen infection rebounds with new cases topping 1,000 a day, and Italy’s cases inched up over 500 on Friday. The U.
Trump has defended the U.S. response, blaming China, where the virus was first detected, for America’s problems and saying the U.S. numbers are so high because there is so much testing. Trump supporters and Americans who have refused to wear masks against all medical advice back that line. Dr. David Ho, director of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, who is leading a team seeking treatments for COVID-19, decried such behavior, as well as the country’s handling of the virus.
Among your friends. But I'm guessing everything is met with incredulity among your friends.

The issue is not the Response- The issue is the fact that we have some of the stupidest Ppl on the planet, that R spreading the Corona like wildfire. Latinos & Blacks make up 75% of the cases. U do the math!!
All your articles are met with the same incredulity. What an interesting coincidence.
From Australia.. My state has a second wave, in hard lockdown, curfew, all businesses shut, masks mandatory. We are taking this very seriously. 0 cases 5 weeks ago, now 700 plus per day. I love America and the people but am dismayed at the total lack of leadership, blame Trump.
Can confirm.
Oh no... Not incredulity... More spin, probably, I ain't paying for a largely propagandistic rag. Seriously, we have pride. We were kinda dumb about lockdowns but it isn't as though many other countries weren't just as dumb or moreso. Why so anti-American, really?
It's shocking, but probably predictable since we are spoiled with our 'rights.' Decades and decades of preaching and promoting individualism, and now we want everyone on the same wearing mask page? Our government even has to negotiate & argue about packages to help its citizens.
MarvinDigeorgio What a sh*thole.
CerebusJ America's coronavirus failure has shaken world confidence in the country.
I think the fact that the government of your country can't order governors, mayors etc to follow basic requirements is what puzzles most normal people. US needs to decide whether it's one country or 50.
Most Americans with a brain and a conscience feel the same way. It is incredulous watching our corrupt President & his GOP enablers lie & deceive us over and over again while failing miserably to provide any type of critical leadership.
In the Heaven, there are the angels that do not progress. They are either of God, or of the devil. That is why our spirit has only one sense which is: either faith which is of God, or incredulity or doubt which is of the devil; ProphetKacouPhilippe
Nobody believes there are 50 million cases you have to cite someone if you use an outrageous figure. _stah
Nightmare is the only word I can think of. I'm a dual citizen living in Toronto where things are slowly and safely moving forward. I can't sleep because my family are all in the US trying to stay alive. I know it doesn't have to be as bad it is.
Bullshit. Just because America won't buy into the virus narrative like the UK has doesn't mean I think any less of them, the opposite in fact.
Print it in bold letters: We are not an exceptional country in any way.
We know. Same here.
And at home.
