A low-cost decking material that could also help remove more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than was emitted during its manufacture could be commercially available by next summer, researchers at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory said. This is a solution for a multi-billion dollar industry that has conventionally been a major contributor to carbon emissions.
Not only are these alternative candidates more expensive to manufacture and procure, but they can also not match properties such as the strength and durability of conventionally used materials. Researchers, therefore, need to focus on approaches that are effective replacements for these materials.Made using wood and plastic composite, decking boards have been used instead of lumber boards since they are more durable and can resist ultraviolet radiation.
To test if this approach was feasible, the researchers used a classic chemical reaction where CO2 reacts with another organic group, phenol, which is abundant in coal and lignin. The interaction between these two components resulted in 2-5 percent of carbon by weight.
