US, China consulate closures deal losses to both nations

In shutting each other’s consulates, the United States and China have done more than strike symbolic blows in their escalating feud. For China, the loss of its mission in Houston dims its view of America’s South and, according to U.S.

The closures of the consulates up the ante in the diplomatic confrontation, with the Trump administration turning up the heat on China in the midst of an already heated rivalry that has been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic and ahead of the November U.S. presidential election — and Beijing responding in kind.

In addition to serving as service centers for visa seekers and Chinese and American citizens in need of assistance in each city, the consulates provided a safe and secure headquarters for intelligence collection and political reporting. A second U.S. official, who like the first was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, said Chengdu was important for “understanding and messaging the Chinese people and especially the people in that district, which includes Tibet.”

For many years, it was the lone foreign consulate in Chengdu, with other nations forced to locate diplomatic missions in Chonqqing, a mega-city that is home to major U.S. and other Western commercial interests. The Chengdu consulate had also overseen U.S. interests in the provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou.

Shutting down consulates is self wounding,that now exposes Trump's stenchy political soft belly, in a sea of economic turmoil,amidst unrelenting galloping global corona virus pandemic,that promises to bring global economies, to their knees, their sizes notwithstanding!

Don't trade with a country with which you share zero political values! Trade and political cultural values should be interlinked and be subject to regular reviews! China should never have been in the Western trading sphere with a culture of political totalitarianism!

They also show the whole world how so called adults charged with leading their country behaving like immature children.

How many new trade customers does China have? It’s quite possible trump has already set the nation into a food shortage problem next year. More murder. Trump is a murderer. He kills citizens.

Who's side is the AP on? As if this is just a middle school food fight. No, China is playing us, corrupting the WHO, stealing our intellectual technology, hacking us so much the FBI has to open a new investigation every few hours, sending SPIES into our institutions. Enough!

Can't wait for Biden to take office and put an end to this BS and ease tensions between the US and China. As well as reestablish friendly relationships with our allies. Everything Trump has done must be undone.
