Drake tasked a committee of the Academic Senate with the question of whether the statewide assessment used for California public school students, known asThe committee report gives a clear answer: no.the report, which is scheduled to be presented to the Board next month, concluded that “the ... assessment is not appropriate as an admissions test, required or optional, for the UC.
The committee was apparently concerned about the racial and socioeconomic disparities that affect standardized exams in general.
The Academic Senate committee recommends that UC take other other steps to improve equity in its admissions, such as forming closer partnership between UC and the K-12 system, increasing access to college-preparatory courses, and providing more state funding for academic preparation programs.and one of the nation’s most outspoken critics of standardized admissions tests, noted that with the decisions, no public universities on the west coast of the U.S.
Schaeffer contends that those schools will maintain a competitive advantage in attracting talented, diverse applicants, and he added, “It was never realistic to believe California academics could devise a better test in less than five years given that the College Board could not create a fair and accurate admissions exam over nearly a century and ACT could not do so in 50 years."
