Universal Music (UMG) has teamed up with MassAppealRecs to launch a new label aimed at growing India's hip-hop scene on a global scale.

Divine, one of the most-streamed independent artists in the subcontinent and a key figure in so-called 'gully rap' -- a raw, gritty and unfiltered form of local language hip-hop that has become hugely popular with millions of young people in India.

"It's an honour to be associated with a legend like Nas… For him to recognise not just me, but the whole Indian hip-hop scene is a big win for hip-hop, and for hip-hop in India," reflected Divine, whose domestic hits include "Meri Gully Mein," "Kaam 25" and "Jungli Sher," which was the first Indian single that Apple Music released worldwide.

Divine's recently launched media company and record label, Gully Gang Entertainment, will continue to operate independently from Universal and Mass Appeal.

Universal Music Group: Original Masters for 'Many of the Artists' Named in Class Action Were Not Lost in FireHole has dropped out of a class action lawsuit against Universal Music Group after accepting that their masters were not affected by the 2008 fire that reportedly destroyed up to 500,000 master recordings in the record company's archive vaults. I wonder what else they can do to back up Masters; screenshot the sessions with timestamp before filing away? Also wonder how the courts would of handled burned masterers. Glad UMG pushed thru it.
