PUBLISHED 5:37 PM CDT Apr. 22, 2022TEXAS — Texans hit by the spring tornadoes are still waiting to find out if they will qualify for disaster aid. FEMA has yet to declare the spring storms a disaster, and local relief efforts are lacking funds.
Leonard Wilson is one of hundreds of uninsured or underinsured Texans with tornado damage who could lose out on federal funding if the state doesn’t meet damage requirements.More than 60 years of memories were gone in minutes when a tornado hit his childhood home while he was inside.He survived with just a few scratches, but his home is a total loss.The Elgin man says what saved him was a door that fell on top of him, shielding him from flying debris. Wilson is disabled and requires a caregiver.
“Our main goal is to try and get them paired up with someone that can, you know, walk alongside them for the next two to three months,” he said.
