An underwater data centre could start operating off the west coast of the US before the end of 2022

. The project is an attempt to show the viability of using the ocean to provide cooling, which normally accounts for a large portion of data centre energy use.

“By placing the data centres subsea, we eliminate the electrically driven cooling which is 40 per cent of the power consumption,” says

Won’t there be other issues? More expensive? Like dealing with salt water erosion etcetera

Fine

Hmmm .. How would that affect the undersea life? Data Centres run very hot, no? As an I.T. Engineer I haven't seen one that doesn't. As well, wouldn't this ocean warming affect the weather? Not that it's a bad idea but I see the Environment getting worse because of it.

From the Cloud to the Seabed

Microsoft did one back in 2016

How many reasons does it take to show this is a dumb idea. 1) wasting the cogen opportunity 2) structural and mechanical enhancements for a corrosive underwater environment 3) high cost of maintenance 4) saltwater and integrated circuits This is a joke, right?

Nothing new about this. It would be news if the data center generated its own power by ocean currents.

newmoneyreview right on topic with your latest episode. Which was very interesting.

Unnecessary

I was under the impression that there were hundreds of these centers all over the place, especially in deep cold water locations

deep data?

Better than the one from Microsoft in the Netherlands who are using 4 million liters of drinking water a year to cool down their equipment shame shame shame and then we normal civilians got the order don’t wash your cars or don’t water your garden!

Are they still using old tech processors?

No thanks. Our shellfish are already being cooked by the rise in temperatures associated with coal being burned to power datacenters

How about using the heat to do something useful? Desalination? District heating?

Not a bad way to keep the ocean nice and toasty

'Underwater data centre in the Pacific could start ruining the ocean by the end of the year.'

Um...won't this also warm the ocean?

Dethklock master repository.

Wasn't Microsoft doing this a few years ago?

'Smart' hands are going to have fun & games with that one.
