DOTHAN, Ala. - “That could be a true squatter, someone who just showed up and just moved into your home,” said Farah Majid, the assistant director of advocacy at Legal Services of Alabama . “This just makes it to where a homeowner wouldn’t have to go through the court process, which of course is lengthy and costly. They essentially could just do an affidavit.”
While it sounds like a win-win for property owners, other Alabama laws make Majid concerned for a certain type of legal tenants. Luckily, Majid said the law provides civil relief for those removed illegally through this process, allowing them to counter sue if they can provide proof they had a verbal agreement.
