Uncharted Lancaster's Treasure Hunt benefits historical groups

Next month, the 'Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure' will have over $3,000 in prizes but raise much more for some local historical groups.LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — A real treasure hunt will take place in Lancaster County next month. But before seeing if"X" marks the spot, you must understand how it all began.

"I grew up in the 1980s and loved watching those adventure films of the time, like 'Raiders the Lost Ark' and 'The Goonies.' As a child, I always wanted to have an adventure similar to the adventures that you're seeing these heroes have, and as you grow up, you realize that's a bit of a fantasy," recalled's Adam Zurn."But thanks to the internet, 3D printing, and laser cutters, I realized I could create adventures for people to participate in.

Zurn has learned a lot in organizing his previous hunts but knows how much fun they can be for those who keep coming back each year. "Every year gets a little more complicated and detailed, and I get a lot of enjoyment out of hearing people say how much fun they had last year," said Zurn."I had a three-generation family working on it. So grandparents, parents, grandkids, everyone out there together and creating memories."In addition to a fun event, Zurn's hunts help others appreciate the outdoors and history of Lancaster County. The story around the Golden Osprey is actually based on reality.

"I'll be releasing a weekly set of clues that has basically three main components. First is a diary challenge. So they need to use the diary to sleuth out an answer," Zurn said."From there, there's a local history challenge, and they'll be using some local history knowledge and their good friend and Google to ultimately sleuth the answer.
