UNC memorial to enslaved people vandalized with ‘racist and other deplorable language’

An outdoor art installation also was vandalized with racist and hateful language Sunday, Kevin M. Guskiewicz, interim chancellor of UNC, said in a message to the campus. A university spokesman described the artwork as a piece designed by a student “in support of inclusivity in student activism.” In a statement to the Herald-Sun newspaper late Monday night, Spivey said vandalism of a monument violates everything his group stands for. “If these acts of vandalism were in fact committed by any member of Heirs, then the perpetrator were acting on their own, in a renegade capacity and unsanctioned by the Board of Directors,” he told the Herald-Sun.

I was told today by my lawyer that something in regards to my name was spraypainted on a monument. UNC has not officially contacted me even though I am a PhD student nor told anything else to my lawyer. They didn't tell him what was written, nor have they told any of you

Besides stating that they won’t tolerate it and replacing barriers, has the school done anything to directly support those affected? How are they actually making change on campus at UNC and setting the example for others all over the US in light of events like this?
