Jefferson County detectives who were unable to chase theft suspects in a stolen car because of a new police accountability law found a different solution to make the arrests.

PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. — Jefferson County detectives who were unable to chase theft suspects in a stolen car because of a new police accountability law found a different solution to stop the car.

At about the same time, a red Honda Civic passed them going about 20 mph over the speed limit in a no-passing zone. Because recent legislation, in most cases, only allows pursuits if there is probable cause to believe the person in the car is under the influence or has committed a violent crime, the detectives stopped and watched the suspect from afar.

The car drove over the spike strips, which punctured its tires, but the driver continued toward Highway 20 and onto Highway 104.
