ILO's convention against the worst forms of child labour signed by all 187 member states - UN labour agency

A child of a labourer uses a shovel to dry sweets inside its factory in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan on July 27, 2020.

The International Labour Organization 's convention against the worst forms of child labour was backed this week by the Pacific island nation of Tonga, making it the first UN labour treaty to be ratified by all 187 of its members. "Universal ratification ... is an historic first that means that all children now have legal protection against the worst forms of child labour," ILO director-general Guy Ryder said on Tuesday.

Yet global progress in tackling child labour has slowed in recent years — particularly among children aged between five and 11, and the Covid-19 pandemic could lead to the first rise in the practice since 2000, several UN agencies warned in June.
