UN chief urges 'rapid' emission cuts to curb climate change

GENEVA — The head of the United Nations called Thursday for “immediate, rapid and large-scale” cuts in greenhouse gas emissions to curb global warming and avert climate disaster. “These changes are just the beginning of worse to come,” he said, appealing to governments to meet the goals of the 2015 Paris climate accord.

“Even with ambitious action to slow greenhouse gas emissions, sea levels will continue to rise and threaten low-lying islands and coastal populations throughout the world,” the authors wrote. Michael Mann, a prominent climate scientist at Pennsylvania State University, said he agreed with the report’s message of urgency but questioned some of the starker warnings it contained.

Global Warming Climate change is not some isolated change in the air temperature. It encompasses sea-level rise, storms, heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, acidifying oceans and disruptions in the sensitive planetary rhythms on which human society developed.
