Leonid Regheta fortifies himself these days with constant calls to family in his native Ukraine, as well as poetry and prayer.

Leonid Regheta, a former refugee from Ukraine who is a pastor at the Russian River of Life Church in Plano, points to Psalm 32:10 in his Ukrainian Bible, known as Psalm 33:10 in English, on Monday, Feb. 21, 2022, in Plano, TX. “This is the passage of the Bible that I’m praying with for Ukraine specifically in this situation” Regheta said. “For me as a pastor, I believe that the Lord can frustrate those plans, can destroy them, “And his sovereign will should take place.

“Donetsk and Luhansk regions have been recognized as independent countries, which now in Putin’s eyes means that they are no longer part of Ukraine. Now it’s a legal argument and a technical argument and we may not agree with it and we may not like it, but in his eyes they’re no longer part of Ukraine, which means that if he sends in troops, or in our vocabulary, he invades, he’s technically not invading Ukraine.

“We’re just trying to keep ourselves together, help each other and support each other in this moment,” said Desheva. “It’s hard to believe that in 2022 we’re having to worry about war in Ukraine.”
