Ukraine can win this war, NATO chief says; Finland and Sweden move to join military alliance

This is CNBC's live blog tracking developments on the war in Ukraine. See below for the latest updates.

NATO's Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Sunday that "Ukraine can win this war" following an informal meeting of the group. His comments came after Finland announced it would apply to join the military alliance in what marks a historic move for the traditionally neutral Nordic country. Sweden is expected to follow suit with both applications likely to enflame tensions between NATO and Russia further. Moscow warned last week of "retaliatory steps" if Finland joined the alliance.Ukrainian forces say they have pushed back the Russian military in the region around Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine, and near the border with Russia.

On Sunday, Ukraine's military said it is preparing for more Russian attacks around Izyum, a city to the south of Kharkiv that's become a focus of fighting in recent days.

Win the war like for real...I'm not being racist but white folks are evil..they want bloodshed to continue instead of peace

It became clear that Russia cannot win already after a week of fighting. What made it apparent was Ukrainians’ will to fight. Apparently even now the Russians are not fully in control of the occupied lands, they never will be.

Il va sûrement gagner. Ukraine

Turkey lays out demands as Finland, Sweden seek NATO membershipTurkey's foreign minister said on Sunday that Sweden and Finland must stop supporting terrorists in their countries, provide clear security guarantees and lift export bans on Turkey as they seek membership in NATO. Refusing to address Turkey's security concerns, while entering an alliance that would demand Turkey support their security concerns seems pretty crappy for Turkey. Otherwise, entry should be rejected as an undesirable risk, addressable via cooperation as non-NATO members. Just plain outright blackmail to further their own agenda! Throw out all Islam dominant countries from the alliance. They are not friends of Europe.
