Cheng claimed Chinese authorities wanted to know what the U.K.'s role was in Hong Kong's civil unrest, along with his connections to mainland Chinese friends who had joined the protests., but states that he did nothing "illegal or illegitimate during the events" and was working on behalf of the British consulate to collect information about the status of the protests.
