Incarnate Word Cardinals linebacker Kelechi Anyalebechi chased down McNeese State running back Deonta McMahon during the third quarter of Saturday’s conference game at Benson Stadium.Adding another accolade to a record-setting season, Incarnate Word quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr. was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year, the league announced Wednesday.
In his first season at UIW as a transfer from Nicholls State, Scott ranked second in the FCS with 344.6 passing yards per game, throwing for a nation-leading 50 touchdowns. His marks of 11.56 yards per attempt and 218.1 passing efficiency lead the nation and are on pace to become new FCS records. Scott, a Walter Payton Award finalist, has also run for 342 yards and seven touchdowns this season, leaving him four shy of the FCS record of 61 combined passing and rushing scores.
UIW linebacker Kelechi Anyalebechi was selected as the Southland’s Defensive Player of the Year. A finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award recognizing the top defensive player in the FCS, Anyalebechi notched a team-leading 88 tackles with seven tackles for loss, two interceptions and three passes broken up.
The Cardinals are 10-1 this season, including 5-1 in league games to claim a share of the Southland title. UIW earned the No. 7 seed in the FCS playoffs and will face either Elon or Furman in a second-round matchup at 1 p.m. Dec. 3 in Benson Stadium.
