Disney Plus' latest sports film isn't just a movie. Rise tells the true story of basketball star, Giannis Antetokounmpo , as well as the Antetokounmpo family as a whole. Giannis and his brother, Thanasis , grow up stateless after their parents emigrate from Nigeria to Greece and are unable to obtain citizenship.
Uche Agada: I agree. The very first day on set we were together...it was the very first scene we shot—we shot it together—and it definitely was, like you said, a cheat code. And it really made things easier, especially starting off. And then when he called me up asking me to try out I was like,"okay, definitely," but, also, I was really surprised because I'd never heard of anything like that before. So I put in my self-tape, Disney likes it, and then they asked me to tape myself playing basketball. I did that. And then, when I knew I was getting close, is when they asked me to do a chemistry read with him, and I was like, “That's my brother. I'm sure a chemistry read will be pretty easy.
Uche Agada: I mean, there was a lot of information on the internet about—not just them—but their whole family. And there's a lot of videos on YouTube that people have made. There's podcasts, articles... a whole bunch of stuff that we got to research on them and their family and how they grow up. It definitely made things easier, for sure. And also speaking to the director about certain things and just working all together made things easier.
