SANTA CRUZ — After forming just more than a week ago, The Palestine solidarity encampment in Quarry Plaza on the campus of UC Santa Cruz has steadily grown, with tents popping up around and above the camp’s original perimeter every day.
The UCSC encampment, which was organized by the local chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, has a list of specific demands that can be found, in short, call for the university to completely divest from weapon-manufacturing companies and to cease research collaborations with weapon manufacturing industries, and that instead UCSC should invest in its students and workers — and to disclose and provide full transparency of the University of California’s assets including investments,...
The demand that has received the most public scrutiny is one calling for “a complete academic boycott,” which includes “cutting ties UC wide with all zionist institutions — including study abroad programs, fellowships, seminars, research collaborations and universities. Cut ties with the Helen Diller foundation, Koret foundation, Israel institute, and Hillel International. Comply with BDS , as according to the BDS National Committee, within all University operations.
