Hundreds of workers tested positive for COVID-19 at a Smithfield Foods hog-processing plant in Sioux Falls, S.D.Hundreds of workers tested positive for COVID-19 at a Smithfield Foods hog-processing plant in Sioux Falls, S.D.As more businesses start to reopen and people go back to work, some companies are looking for advice on how to keep employees safe from the coronavirus.
Freeman complains the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration — the federal workplace safety agency — offered little direction about protective gear or what to do when a worker tests positive for COVID-19. That left essential businesses that kept operating during the pandemic to figure it out for themselves.
"Industry has provided that direction," Freeman said."But it remains disappointing to us that we're not seeing that same level of clarity and direction across the board from government."

Ventilators, PPE, tests... scarcity of these supplies didn't concern Trump one bit. Scarcity in meat supplies...and Trump uses the DPA. Does he protect the workers? Nope, he protects companies from liability and forces workers back to unsafe conditions. Is this YOUR president?
HCiavotto Looks like the workers really are considered chopped liver
work till you die.... economists said we we're in a land of income inequality like the Guilded Age. I didnt think were were descending into Dickensian London levels of working class suffering.
NPR can't be defunded soon enough.
I.e., the Trump Administration has effectively rendered federal regulatory agencies to be ineffective and incompetent.
The Wild West never actually went away. I carry my P99.
They vote for candidates because they promise to do away with regulations, then complain there aren’t enough regulations. 🤷♀️
The factory system Tyson sits atop of prevents you from knowing where your food comes from and how it was raised. You don't have to participate. There are thousands of small pork & poultry farmers selling retail who can ship you a better-tasting product.
this is not about food supply. it’s about letting the working poor die so that corporations may escape liability and live
No one did. It’s likely they contracted it outside of work. They should have masks though
The GOP1 priority is liability immunity for companies that kill their workers from COVID-19 reopenings.
As we read this McConnell is working hard to exempt these companies from liability if their workers become exposed to covid and get sick/die. No repercussions means most companies won't even bother providing PPE.
The IAGovernor said if any of the workers of those plants feel unsafe to go back to work, they WOULD NOT be eligible for unemployment. Whereas GovofCO said workers would be eligible! As there are JBS plants in both states, let's see which plant implements safety measures!
If you refuse to work because you are scared for your life and that of your family, are you still eligible for government assistance, or just on your own?
The food supply is a national security issue. I am certain there are non-union employees would be willing to take those jobs.
Who forgot to pay off the union boss before he blabbered? Clearly everyone is losing their lives over this and clearly it will only be fixed with more cash to the union.
Even idiotic union bosses know that meat packing business owners dont intend for their employees to lose their life.
Mark Cuban, though said about Elon, said it best about CEOs: “Anything that negatively impacts Tesla, Elon hates, period, end of story,” Cuban said. “I don’t think he has other people’s interests at heart. I mean, I don’t really know him at all, but that’s just my take.”
I didn't see this in the article but how did the virus make it into these plants? Have they traced the workers that might have brought it there? That can help perhaps to prevent future outbreaks?
He doesn't get it. The red hats need their meat.
