America's failure so far to contain the spread of the coronavirus as it moves across the country has been met with astonishment and alarm on both sides of the Atlantic.

With confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. hitting 5 million Sunday, by far the highest of any country, the failure of the most powerful nation in the world to contain the virus has been met with astonishment and alarm in Europe.

Yet, more than four months into a sustained outbreak, the U.S. reached the 5 million mark, according to the running count kept by Johns Hopkins University. Health officials believe the actual number is perhaps 10 times higher, or closer to 50 million, given testing limitations and the fact that as many as 40% of all those who are infected have no symptoms.

France and Germany are now imposing tests on arrival for travelers from “at risk” countries, the U.S. included. When the virus first appeared in the United States, Trump and his supporters quickly dismissed it as either a “hoax” or a virus that would quickly disappear once warmer weather arrived. At one point, Trump suggested that ultraviolet light or injecting disinfectants would eradicate the virus. .

Italy warned us all, thankfully Canada listened.

COVID-19: Face masks for restaurants or cafes to wear when eating. That's a nice idea, isn't it?

They have their own problems and if it weren't for Democratic states we would be one of the lowest for deaths. It's a virus. Just like the flu. But more deadly. Viruses don't just go away. Common sense is sometimes better than experts. You can't hide from a virus.

America is pretty alarmed as well.

Unfortunately this is true! Probably due to all these US scientific wimps, the deep red state governors clearing the way into totalitarianism, and an infantilized, ignorant and submissive population. There isn’t any other explanation.

It IS astonishing and alarming... but to be fair which of these European countries has not had to deal with a despotic leader - please help us

Coronavirus dramatics are so six months ago. 🙄🙄🙄

This is the country that made the difference in WW I and provide the winning edge in WW II and defeated the USSR in the Cold War and on the cutting edge of fighting terrorism and has no answer for the pandemic...

Just call us 'The Embarrassment'. America hasn't appeared this weak and looked more stupid to more people ever in history, thanks mostly to the Clown in Chief and his largely uneducated and hardcore political minions.

👎👎👎

BREAKING: America is neither Europe or Asia. (You may now return to your normal Sunday acticities).

It's met with astonishment and alarm on the West Coast as well.

I was hoping America would last as long as I did. It's going to be close.

Global Coronavirus Cases Near 20 MillionThe number of confirmed coronavirus cases globally closed in on 20 million as cases in the U.S. neared five million and a number of countries saw record increases. China shall be held accountable for these cases. We must not blame them for not wearing mask, or no social distancing. They're victims of China's crime. We must not let China get away from this crime. We must also not let Biden help China to cover up the crime ! Biden is bad. From April 12, 2009 to April 10, 2010, CDC estimated there were 60.8 million cases (range: 43.3-89.3 million), 274,304 hospitalizations (range: 195,086-402,719), and 12,469 deaths (range: 8868-18,306) in the United States due to the (H1N1)pdm09 virus.
