The U.S. government and the Afghan Taliban have reached an agreement on a weeklong reduction in violence to begin later Friday that could be followed by a permanent peace deal a week later

The agreement—which covers elements such as roadside bombs, suicide bombs and rocket attacks—is a further milestone after months of talks toward ending a war that has gone on for more than 18 years.
