The U.S. and South Africa have new daily records of coronavirus cases, underlining the challenges still ahead as nations try to reopen economies. Many U.S. states, including Florida, Texas and Arizona, are struggling to contain the spread of the pandemic.

Authorities are closing honky tonks, bars and other drinking establishments in some parts of the U.S. to stem the surge of COVID-19 infections — a move backed by sound science about risk factors that go beyond wearing or not wearing masks.

Surging numbers in California prompted Gov. Gavin Newsom to announce just ahead of the Fourth of July weekend that he was closing bars, theaters and indoor restaurant dining over most of the state, a region that includes about 30 million people and Los Angeles County.“The bottom line is the spread of this virus continues at a rate that is particularly concerning,” Newsom said.

“Too many people were crowding into restaurants late at night, turning these establishments into breeding grounds for this deadly virus,” Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez said. The U.S. has now reported nearly 2.7 million cases and more than 128,000 dead. Globally there have been 10.7 million coronavirus cases and more than 516,000 dead, according to Johns Hopkins’ count. The true toll of the pandemic is believed to be significantly higher, in part because of limited testing and mild cases that have been missed.

Despite the surging numbers, the western beach of state of Goa, a popular backpacking destination, allowed 250 hotels to reopen Thursday after being closed for more than three months. Tourists will either have to carry COVID-19 negative certificates or get tested on arrival. In a scientific brief published this week, the U.N. health agency reviewed 34 published studies on the association between smoking and COVID-19, including the probability of infection, hospitalization, severity of disease and death.

You are probably going to get the Wuhan coronavirus you will get better or you won't, then everyone can move on, or live in constant fear for the rest of your life.

Y'all commenting are ok with hundreds of thousands getting critically ill and needing care in already at capacity hospitals, as long as death rates are steady. And then Karen can get her blowout. Wow. As as species, we should just call it a day. We're done here.

I would argue we, in FL, are not struggling as our government isn’t even trying. Aside from a few city/county leaders this state is refusing to do much of, well, anything. That tends to lead to very little struggle.

My family & I are just going to pretend to riot, burn, & break shit this long weekend in order to be able to hang out & eat cake together. Covid doesn’t travel in the riot circles!!

Struggling? Ok. If they are “struggling” what word would you use for NY?

Asymptomatic spread w plummeting death rates. Herd immunity!

Notice home they mention ‘Coronavirus’ and not ‘CV19’. You are been hoaxed.

Quite the struggle.🤦‍♂️
