Solar 2022: Funding Notice: Small Innovative Projects in Solar 2022: Concentrating Solar-Thermal Power and Photovoltaics

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office announced the Small Innovative Projects in Solar 2022: Concentrating Solar-Thermal Power and Photovoltaics funding program, which will award up to $5 million for projects that seek to fund innovative research and development, seedling projects in photovoltaics and concentrating solar-thermal power technologies in an effort to accelerate the large-scale development and deployment of solar technology.

The structure of this funding opportunity is designed to streamline the application process to encourage applications from a diverse pool of researchers who have never applied or been selected for a SETO project award. SETO is interested in proposals that advance technology development goals through strategies supported by diversity in experience, perspectives, and research discipline.

SETO expects to make about 15 to 23 awards, each ranging between $250,000 and $400,000. Teams from universities, federally-funded research and development centers, nonprofit and for-profit companies, community-based organizations, state agencies, and local governments are encouraged to apply. Prior to submitting a full application for this opportunity, a brief 1-2 paragraph, mandatory letter of intent is due onProjects in this topic area will advance novel ideas in CSP that either apply new science and ideas to the sector or close a technical gap or limitation in an emerging technology. Responsive concepts include all aspects of CSP plants with thermal energy storage, as well as solar-thermal process heat innovations, solar-thermal fuel systems, and pumped thermal energy storage.

Fraunhofer ISE Invents Silicon Recycling Process For Solar PanelsFraunhofer ISE has created a system for recycling the silicon in old solar panels so it can be used to make new solar cells. How much energy does that take — from uninstalling to transit to the recycling plant to reassembly to transit again to re-installation? Good that recycling is key. Problem is cost. How much cheaper is virgin silicon. Recycling sand? This is a joke, right?

Garmin Instinct 2 Solar smartwatches may never need charging | EngadgetYou'll just need to spend a few hours in bright sunlight every day instead.. UK weather=No way. I got the Solar Instinct and tried really hard last summer to keep the watch from never needing a charge. Did not work. It was more lying in the sun than on my wrist. If you are not on a roof or an open field with short sleeve and access to sun. Its a no way.

SpaceX Satellites Falling Out of Orbit After Solar StormSpaceX’s newest fleet of satellites is tumbling out of orbit after being struck by a solar storm These satellites aren't going to 'fall down'. Falling out of orbit means not achieving orbital position. It'll be a long time b4 these small satellites re-enter Earth's atmosphere & burn up. Point 2: The solar storm interfered with telemetry. It wasn't 'magnetic repositioning'.

Let me guess..... the Boy Blunder Musk's company had not adequately shielded the sats? Too heavy, too expensive.. blah blah... heh, let's clog space with our below-spec, BUT CHEAP, junk. Why anyone with common sense buys a Musk product is beyond explanation. So now there are 40 new chunks of space junk wandering around uncontrolled. We're insane to let Elon Musk chart our species' way forward into space. Alien intervention
