Johnny Canales honored in speech before the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday.

U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro on Friday honored the legacy of the legendary Johnny Canales , the host of a popular music show who died Thursday. In a speech before the U.S. House of Representatives, Castro spoke about Canales and his effect on the Tejano music industry, helping to launch the careers of many stars, like Selena . “Johnny was a champion for civil rights, an advocate for veterans, and a musician in his own right,” Castro said.

TV host Johnny Canales helped launch Selena and other Tejano luminaries Castro, who has long been a champion for more Latino representation in mass media, also included a reference to Canales’ well-known catchphrase. “To his loyal fans, Johnny was best known for his catchphrase: ‘You got it. Take it away!’ — the words of encouragement he would share with all the performers who joined him on stage,” Castro said.

Top 5 Tejano artists to appear on ‘The Johnny Canales Show’ It aired for almost two decades in various forms, including on Telemundo and Univision. At one point, it was broadcast in Los Angeles, Miami and other U.S. cities and across Latin America as well as in South Texas. Canales, 76, had been in declining health in recent weeks.
