U.S. Postal Service ranks worst cities, states for dog attacks on its workers

California had the most dog bites by far at 727, an increase of 52 incidents from 2022. The state with the second-most was Texas at 411, an increase of only seven incidents compared to 2022. USPS warns dog owners that the average cost of an insurance claim by the victim of a dog bite is $$64,555. Owners of the attacking dogs could also be liable for medical bills, lost wages due to time spent recovering, uniform replacement, and damages for pain and suffering.

Carriers also have the right to withhold service if they think a house or neighborhood is repeatedly unsafe due to violent dogs. In those cases, homeowners or neighborhood residents have to instead go to the post office to pick up their mail.
