WASHINGTON - Republican and Democratic U.S. lawmakers said on Thursday they would keep up their push for tougher sanctions on Turkey over its offensive in Syria despite the announcement of a five-day ceasefire.
Leaders of the Senate Foreign Relations and House of Representatives Foreign Affairs committees also unveiled sanctions measures with bipartisan support on Thursday, with many of the same provisions. “Senators Van Hollen and Graham have spoken, and they agree on the need to move full steam ahead with their legislation,” said Bridgett Frey, a Van Hollen spokesman. A spokesman for Graham also said they were going to move ahead.

REUTERS/Erin Scott Announcing the sanctions with Graham, Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn said the bill would not be the last step in Congress’ effort to influence Ankara. “Turkey could stop this right now if they wanted to,” she said.
He also said he thought a resolution opposing the offensive in Syria, which passed the House overwhelmingly on Wednesday, would get more than 80 votes in the 100-member Senate, if the chamber’s Republican leaders allowed a vote.
umit_k Almost all democrats except IlhanMN Ilhan said YES to sanctions. She showed her true face once again. She’d be screaming in the senate if it was a Jewish or Christian leader who kills innocent people. But if its an Islamist dictator like Erdogan, she’ll be as silent as a bunny..
tomorrawdotcom Trump said Vice President Pence negotiated a 5 day ceasefire in return we would lift any sanctions on Turkey. So congress! All of you are insignificant as far as Trump or anyone in the executive branch is concerned.
Apparently, though, we can rent out our Servicemen and women out to Saudia Arabia, for a price.
US has to stand behind the agreements they made. Domestic issues should not be mix with international issues.
“Turkey has legitimate national security concerns within Syria but they cannot be met by invasion and force of arms,” Graham said in a statement. NOW we find the term *invasion* Bet that word's escaped him for a few years, unless of course it was Russia or China
The fact that 20million Kurds already live in Turkey shows that it is strange to considered that Turkey is willingly attacking them.
But what was really doing US in Syria? Guarding ISIS not to resurrect? I understood it only as a US foreign policy against Iran! Are the Congress and the Senate ready to push so much for the Kurds and make Turkey get out from NATO?Because this was next step...Babysitting Kurds?
The deployment to Turkey is not to take away the territory from the Kurds but to eliminate the terro group from the northern part of Syria.
Yeah because why should they be able to have their troops in Syria. Only we can! Because reasons.
PACKED‼️ Awaiting President realDonaldTrump in Dallas, Texas! TeamTrump is ready to rally!!
