Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had forecast 221,000 new applications for jobless benefits last week

Initial jobless claims, an indication of layoffs across the U.S., declined by 3,000 to a seasonally adjusted 223,000 in the week ended March 2, the Labor Department said Thursday.
