U.S. air strikes against Iran-backed militia in Iraq and Syria were a necessary and appropriate action meant to limit the risk of escalation, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said

It was the second time President Joe Biden had ordered retaliatory strikes against Iran-backed militia since taking office five months ago. He ordered limited strikes in Syria in February, that time in response to rocket attacks in Iraq.

Biden's administration has been looking to potentially revive a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. The attacks underscore how Biden aims to compartmentalize such defensive strikes, while simultaneously engaging Tehran in diplomacy.

In a statement, the U.S. military said it targeted operational and weapons storage facilities at two locations in Syria and one location in Iraq. US bombs Iran targets in Iraq and Syria before Israel president's White House visit'The targets were selected because these facilities are utilized by Iran-backed militias that are engaged ... against U.S. personnel and facilities in Iraq,' the Pentagon stated. THAT would be a major step to drawing the right kind of red line. If US troops weren't in Iraq and past Presidents actually kept their word and took them out long ago this wouldn't have been an issue.

U.S. Airstrikes Target Iran-Backed Militias in Syria and IraqThe Pentagon claimed, like it did after the U.S. bombed Iran-backed militias in February, that the strikes were designed to minimize the risk of escalation while sending a “clear and unambiguous” message So the US wants to leave Syria. a good thing. If the US has attacked these fighters who defeated the ISIS it either means they intend to leave Syria, or they will face an ejection from Syria. The Shia groups will now fight and defeat the US in Syria. The strike was illegal because the U.S. military are illegally occupying parts of Syria that we took illegally. By being there, we are escalating. Saudi Arabia are worse in human rights but we support them and sale them military equipment.
