U.S. consumer spending rose 1% in August while incomes fell 2.7%, presenting a new hurdle for the economic recovery

The Commerce Department offered the latest snapshot of household finances Thursday. Economists had expected the report to show that consumers continued to increase spending in August while their income, in the aggregate, fell mainly because of a drop in government aid for unemployed workers.
