Since the start of the current fiscal year, which began in October 2020, U.S. officials along the southern border have made more than 1.5 million migrant apprehensions.

U.S. authorities stationed along the southern border stopped migrants nearly 209,000 times in August, as unlawful entries slowed down slightly after reaching a 21-year high during the previous month, according toThe Customs and Border Protection statistics show that unauthorized migration to the U.S.-Mexico border remained at an extremely high level toward the end of the summer, when migrant apprehensions have historically dropped due to the heat.

The number of unaccompanied migrant children taken into U.S. border custody in August also decreased slightly from a monthly record high in July. More than 18,800 unaccompanied minors, most of them from Central America, entered U.S. custody last month. Encounters of migrant families with children increased by 4% in August from the previous month. U.S. officials took more than 86,000 parents and children traveling as families into custody and allowed 80% of them to seek U.S. humanitarian protection. The rest were expelled under the public health law, known as Title 42.

Because of the Supreme Court's refusal to pause an August ruling by a federal judge in Texas, U.S. border officials are legally obliged to reinstate the so-called "Remain-in-Mexico" program, which requires asylum-seekers to wait outside the U.S. for their court hearings.
