The U.S. government has asked Australia to scrap proposed laws that will make it the first country in the world to force Facebook Inc and Alphabet Inc's Google to pay for news sourced from local media outlets.

SYDNEY - The U.S. government has asked Australia to scrap proposed laws that will make it the first country in the world to force Facebook Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google to pay for news sourced from local media outlets. In a submission asking the government to “suspend” the plans, assistant U.S. trade representatives Daniel Bahar and Karl Ehlers, suggested Australia instead “further study the markets, and if appropriate, develop a voluntary code.

“The U.S. Government is concerned that an attempt, through legislation, to regulate the competitive positions of specific players ... to the clear detriment of two U.S. firms, may result in harmful outcomes,” said in the document, under the letterhead of the Executive Office of the President. The Australian government announced the legislation last month after an investigation found the tech giants held too much market power in the media industry, a situation it said posed a potential threat to a well-functioning democracy.

The code followed an 18-month review by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission Chairman and “extensive consultation” that included the views of both Google and Facebook, he added.

Look at Australia reigning them in and the U.S. going Tweety Bird 'puh-puh-puh-puh-pleeeeaaase don't do dat.'

FB and Google business models include a non accountable element of simply extracting value from others, anywhere in the world. Be they people or companies. I cannot believe the US govt is lobbying for their right to use the hard work of others for free.

wangichris It's okay for US government to support American tech Giants but sanctions China for doing the same.

Why?

Not sure what is worse, the US government doing the bidding of the worst & most powerful companies in world history, or Reuters not questioning the government’s place in bending to their every wish?

EU/UK have article 11 on this so they'll have this in Europe too. FYI the UK scrapped Article 13 (now 17), but kept Article 11. Its law and companies, like Facebook and Google, have 1 more year to comply.

Why? Just who is asking?

Hold firm Australia

Why what does US give for free. I mean free. No promises no catches. No death or starvation elsewhere

So one pays for the type of news they want to here?
